A Chronicle of Effects. A look at all own/pre-owned/future owned effects!

Sign in to disble this ad
Alright so since I found my stockpile of clips from most of the effects I've owned, I thought I could share them all. The older clips don't sound as great but you'll get the idea.

I'm just going to say a brief thing about each effect and why I don't own it anymore or why I will never sell it, etc.
And if the putfile.com links aren't working, try again later. My newer stuff will go on soundclick.

First off is the..

COLORSOUND TONEBENDER
Category: Fuzz
250$

Description:
An easy to use and superb fuzz. One of the best fuzzes out there in my opinion. It retains the low end so well and the fuzz had that vintage vibe to it. If I had the time, I'd build one of my own.

Do you still have it? Why or Why Not?
The reason I sold it was because it was too big and I found a replacement. But it'll stay on the top of the list forever.

DIGITECH BASS WHAMMY

Category: Pitch Shifting
$500-$1000

Description:
At the moment, the only pitch shifter that does the job great on bass. It's not for everyone and the price sure isn't justified- but if you find one for under 400$, grab that thing for at least the profit and playing Tool's Disposition for the whole night!

Do you still have it? Why or Why Not?
I still have it because there isn't anything better out there for what I need it to do, track the low notes. I use it personally for octave ups with distortion. I also have plans for the harmonies too. I would definitely sell it if there was an alternative that stood true to what this one does. And yes, I'm aware of all the other alternatives out there as of 2008.

MXR Phase 90

Category: Phaser
$80

Description:
It's the easiest pedal I ever owned. One knob for the rate. That was a fun pedal but it wasn't very versatile. It had a great sound but I'm not a big fan on one-trick-ponies.

Do you still have it? Why or Why Not?
I sold it to Tbirdbassist because he wanted it and I just didn't want it anymore. He loves it so that's cool. I liked the pedal but I needed something more.

BOSS DD-3
Category: Delay
$110

Description:
The basic/standard of the music industry, the DD-3. It does the job. It's not bad but when compared to more expensive delays, I put this thing on my guitard board :P

Do you still have it? Why or Why Not?
Like I said, I have it on my guitar board now but I would've sold it if I didn't own guitars. It's a good delay but I found it not very clear and harsh at times.

SOUNDCLIPS
http://soundclick.com/jovi
Labeled as DD-3.

BOSS BF-3 [Current Version] Review
Category: Flanger
$120

Description:
It's a pretty good flanger. It has some modes that I wouldn't use like the Gate/Pan and the ultra setting but I liked the pedal in the guitar input for more flanging. The bass input is a subtle flanger like the BF-2b. All-in-all a balanced flanger.

Do you still have it? Why or Why Not?
I still have it but like the DD-3, on my guitar board. It might not be there for long though cause I have no use for it on the guitar. We'll see, but I would suggest it to anyone seeing it on ebay for cheap.

GUYATONE BR-2
Category: Auto-wah
~$100

Description:
A great funky auto-wah. Man, does it spell FUNK. The only downside is the volume drop/boost when using it, if you get used to the monster inside of this tiny thing, you can tame that problem. I just love having it before my fuzz for extra little something in a fuzz-solo.

Do you still have it? Why or Why Not?
I still have it on the board because of the different sound it has compared to other envelope filters. I love the way it sounds and I pretty much have the volume drop/boost issue fixed when I play.

SOUNDCLIPS

http://media.putfile.com/BR-2-1

SANSAMP PBDDI
Category: DI/preamp
$200

Description:
Damn, my Rick sure loved this thing in recordings. It sounded mint with the right EQ settings. I had it because I was satisfied with my amp's EQ so this helped. It sounds real good and puts that extra bite my Rickenbacker sure loved.

Do you still have it? Why or Why Not?
It was complicated getting it to sound good with the effects in the way and having two preamps run into each other. If I needed a DI for a show though, this thing would be waiting for me at my local GC!

SOUNDCLIPS
http://media.putfile.com/grit-98

BOSS CE-5
Category: Chorus
$80

Description:
A great chorus for the money! Worth every penny new or used. I would max the Depth and Level and it would be nice and beefy. It was the only reason I didn't spend 250$ on a 2-knob analogman chorus.

Do you still have it? Why or Why Not?
I still have it but not on my board. It's in my closet just chilling, making its way to the guitar board or my mini-bass board that I might make someday. It's a great chorus but I wanted more out of the pedal.

SOUNDCLIPS

http://media.putfile.com/ce-5bass

Moog PH-103

Category : 12/6 Stage Phaser
$300

Description:
Yeah, I used to own a Moog. Was that thing huge! It was so big, I couldn't have it on my board. A very versatile pedal if you made your board around it with expression pedals and all. It didn't touch my fancy on bass, but on guitar....man there's nothing better folks...

Do you still have it? Why or Why Not?
I sold it for cheap sadly because I couldn't sell it fast enough! It's not the most sort out after Moog pedal I guess...But all guitarists should have this thing! Bass...not so much. The size is another factor why I sold it.

SOUNDCLIPS
http://media.putfile.com/moog-guitar [a guitar clip...just listen to it...so nice.]

BBE OPTO STOMP
Category: Compressor
$100

Description:
Wish they made this thing for racks. Such a transparent compressor, I couldn't even notice when it was on and off. I always suggest this compressor for a nice transparent compressor to even your playing volume.

Do you still have it? Why or Why Not?
I sold it because I wanted a rack compressor just so I can have more room on my pedalboard. A fine compressor but I wanted my pedalboard to have effects on it only.

SOUNDCLIPS
http://media.putfile.com/BBE-Opto

IBANEZ PD-7
Category: Bass Overdrive/Distortion
$50

Description:
Hey, for the price you get these at, why not! It lost a little low end but it sounded pretty cool. If you were looking for a starter effect for yourself or a beginning bassist, there's nothing to lose! It had overdrive and distortion in the same pedal, how cool is that?!?

Do you still have it? Why or Why Not?
This pedal saw the whole U.S.of A. I bought it from Tbirdbassist and then sold it to a guy in CA. Tbird then missed it so bought it back from the same guy! Traveling pants anyone? I wanted to sell it because I just wanted to see if I'd like distortion on bass.....yeah I definitely love it.

BOSS MT-2
Category: Distortion
$88

Description:
I got it for guitar but I tried it on bass. It's noisy, really hi-gain, and loses low end. Yeah, it sounded pretty bad. I understand you guys like it with the some mods but I would never even try.

Do you still have it? Why or Why Not?
It's a guitar pedal without the bass mods. Don't buy it for bass unless you are getting it modded...do your audience a favor.
It sounds decent on guitar though!

SOUNDCLIPS

http://media.putfile.com/mt2bass

FULLTONE BASSDRIVE MOSFET
Category: Bass Overdrive
$179

Description:
Fulltone? Bass Overdrive? Too good to be true? It was a decent distortion but I was SORT OF reminded by the Ibanez PD-7. It lost some low end but had a better sound.

Do you still have it? Why or Why Not?
It's no longer with me because I didn't like the low end lose. It sounded pretty good but it wasn't for me. At this time, I think I only like overdrive for grit and Fuzz for distortion so don't let me bias opinion steer you in the wrong way for a distortion

SOUNDCLIPS

http://media.putfile.com/mosfet-26

MAXON FL-9Review
Category: Flanger
$263

Description:
Yep, I took a steep fall in search of the right flanger for me. This is an expensive flanger but I understand why. One of the most natural flangers out there but it was a little too subtle for me. It has some great silky smooth sounds though.

Do you still have it? Why or Why Not?
I sold it for almost half of what I got it for. Bummer, but it just was too subtle for me. If you like it that though, this pedal is superb.

ELECTRO-HARMONIX ELECTRIC MISTRESS
Review
Category: Flanger/Chorus
$118

Description:
Yeah, I had a tough time finding the right flanger... This one was quite unique and exotic. It combines chorus and flanger together to make one sweet sound.

Do you still have it? Why or Why Not?
I no longer have this pedal because even though it sounded mint, I wanted a separate flanger and chorus without bending over to turn knobs.

ELECTRO-HARMONIX PULSAR
Category: Tremolo
$80

Description:
Listening to the clip again, it was pretty good. It has two wave forms, square and saw-tooth. Both were pretty good but at the time, I never had a use for it. Nowadays, I would have a use for it but it was already replaced.

Do you still have it? Why or Why Not?
I didn't have a use for the tremolo on my Justin Chancellor Fanboy board except for that Right in Two intro. I would've bought it again but I could only fit the Semaphore tremolo on the board...oh well

SOUNDCLIPS
http://media.putfile.com/pulsar-86

BOSS BF-2 MADE IN JAPAN/BLACK KNOBS/BLACK LABEL

Category: Flanger
~$100

Description:
And the journey ends here with flangers for me. It was all i wanted, but had a tough time finding one with the right knobs and label....and birthplace. It's smooth, in your face, 46&2 type flanging! Although JC never used the MIJ model, it sounds just like it!

Do you still have it? Why or Why Not?
I still have it on my board because it was what i was looking for in a flanger. I'm glad spankypants gave his up

EARTHBOUND SUPERCOLLIDERReview
Category: Fuzz
$120

Description:
What a fuzz... it moved my tonebender RIGHT off the board. It has that tonebender and big muff sound but adds an extra bite to the mix. It doesn't lose any low end and has a ton of sounds!

Do you still have it? Why or Why Not?
It's still on my board and probably will stay there forever. It's such a nice fuzz. That white LED is blinding too!

CATALINBREAD SEMAPHOREReview
Category: Tremolo
$179

Description:
A little pricey...and the construction of the pedal could feel safer...but a nice sounding tremolo that operates at either 9V or 18V. I use it with 18V for the extra headroom and the speed is also faster at 18V.

Do you still have it? Why or Why Not?
It's currently on my board as of 12/24/2008. If I find myself not using a tremolo often enough, I would probably sell it. Only because of the type of effect it is, not because of the sound or anything. It's a great tremolo and I'm still having a lot of fun with it.

SOUNDCLIPS
http://soundclick.com/jovi

Semaphore1 is just the semaphore
Semaphore2 is the a number of effects being controlled by the Semaphore.

HARDWIRE CR-7Review
Category: Chorus
$150

Description:
I never would see this coming... Digitech coming out with a sweet line of effects?...Oh wait...It wasn't Digitech's designs?...They basically bought out a small company and mass produced the pedals?...Huh...Oh well! This Hardwire series line may save Digitech from the fat kids lunch table! The chorus has 7 chorus models and they all sound great! Nice, warm, and deep.

Do you still have it? Why or Why Not?
It's on my board now and one of the easily needed effects for any bassist out there. It adds so much more to your tone and can make basslines sound creepy

SOUNDCLIPS

SUBDECAY QUASAR
Review
Category: Phaser
$180

Description:
My Phaser quest ended here. An all around monster phaser with enough knobs to dial in any sound you want! It can get subtle, wet&slurpy, or have a nice jet phase effect.

Do you still have it? Why or Why Not?
It's on my board and will not leave. It's here to stay unless I find a mint Roland Jet Phase on the street for 20$

LIL' JOVI AKA POLISH LOVE
Review
Description: Overdrive
~$95

Description:
This pedal is great for grit. It's basically my Rick's best friend right now for grit. Oh the grit. It's a love or hate pedal just like a Rickenbacker. I love it for the grit, but don't love the boost switch on it. It has tons of volume but for what I use it for, I don't need it all. What a grit machine...

Do you still have it? Why or Why Not?
The LIL JOVI will never leave! Just because I named it after myself

SUBDECAY PROMETHEUS
Review
Category: Envelope Filter
$250

Description:
It all started when Tayste got me into subdecay effects. I was going to buy a Robotalk for that cool sound but it wasn't practical enough. It was then Tayste clued me in on the Prometheus! Man, what a hype I had for the pedal...and it DIDN'T DISAPPOINT! It's probably one of my favorite pedals ever. It's such a cool effect, I can't sit here on X-mas and type it all out!

Do you still have it? Why or Why Not?
It's not going anywhere anytime. Love what it does and love how it sounds!

ELECTRO-HARMONIX BASS MICRO SYNTHReview
Category: Synth
$250

Description:
I wasn't too crazy about the size of the old one so I never looked into this effect...but when the XO Verison came out, I built my G.A.S levels after watching youtube clips.
It's a nice effect, not usable for some people, but for me...the possibilities are endless

Do you still have it? Why or Why Not?
Yeah, I don't see it moving. The Chunk Systems OS is too expensive and I don't see anything FANTASTIC with it just yet so we'll see.

MXR CARBON COPYReview
Category: Analog Delay
$150

Description:
This bandwagon I didn't jump on until I got my job at GC. On the downtime, I'd play with it and listen to it. Unlike most of my pedals where I'd buy it from hearing it here on Talkbass, I actually got to try it out before buying. I really liked the delays but not so much on the modulation. So i bought it to experiment with two delays together. It was a suitable match

Do you still have it? Why or Why Not?
Yep, as a second delay. I don't like the modulation but as a second delay, it rocks! Dark delayed notes sound awesome.

SOUNDCLIPS
http://soundclick.com/jovi
There's a ton of MXR CC clips on there.

SUBDECAY ECHOBOXReview
Category: Delay w/ Modulation
$250

Description:
The most crystal clear delay I've heard that isn't going to set me back $500! The modulation is epic. Subdecay makes great stuff!

It's not moving. It's just that good.

ALL YOUR BASS R BELONG 2 US AKA BOGDAN's SECOND PEDAL(It's a Solasound Tonebender MKII Clone)
Category: Distortion

Description:
Looks like i got my tonebender back...with extra bite! It's an old-school SolaSound Tonebender and it doesn't loose any low end...except when you turn the knob all the way to the right for some bass-killing tone...

Do you still have it? Why or Why Not?
It won't be on my board but maybe my future mini-board!

DEVI EVER BIT LEGEND OF FUZZ
Category: 8-bit fuzz
$95

Description:
Why wouldn't you buy this pedal? Zelda themed box? Only one female makes the pedals. Who knows for how much longer...It's quite epic sounding as well. I wasn't a big fan of Devi Ever until I heard people use them the right way. This pedal is making me a Devi Ever fan. The breakup on this thing is my favorite in the fuzz category actually. It's so NES-sounding

Do you still have it? Why or Why Not?
I still have it, waiting to be on my Mini-board. What a board this will be

3Leaf Groove RegulatorReview
Category: Envelope Filter (Based off of the Meatball)

Description:
Do you want funk? This is the pedal for you. The extremely versatile 3Leaf is a great add to my collection. It sounds great, built great, and not too much of a hassle to get right now. I highly suggest it for anyone looking for a funky filter that doesn't loose any low end.

I still have it on my mini-board. If I had enough room on my main board, I would have replaced my Guyatone BR-2!

Polish Hate AKA Mephisto Review
Catergory: Fuzz

Description:
A very warm fuzz with an input cap. switcher. It's pretty smooth and very usable in most music genres.

Do you still have it? Why or why not?
I probably won't get rid of it since I love Bogdan's pedals. It'd be a fuzz I'd use for a toned down band setting

I was about to buy one but decided to keep looking. I got a major GAS attack for a Bass MuRF but now I'm thinking that might not be the best way to go right now. So I'm probably going to get the Prometheus after all.
