Chunk Agent 00Funk and spikes?

Sign in to disble this ad
I purchased what I thought was a great deal. A Boss AW-3, but the volume spikes when "slapping and popping" made it unusable at the gig I brought it to. I plan to get the Chunk Agent 00Funk to pair with my Brown Dog. Is this pedal better with volume spikes? I really don't want to have to add a compressor if I don't have to.

It's difficult pedal to control but once ou have it set right, spikes shouldn't be an issue. There are MANY ways to set it wrong. The tiniest turn of the sweep knob will change EVERYTHING. amazing pedal though and that's why I still have mine.

The 00Funk pairs gloriously with the Brown Dog. Still has spike potential, be careful. Of the filters I've used (DOD 25, Maxon AF, EHX Q+, Ibanez SB, 3Leaf GR, Chunk 00Funk), only the 3Leaf is (to date) volume spike-free. The 3Leaf is my favorite overall filter, but the BD+00Funk is my favorite combo, so much fun.

if output spikes bother you in an envelope filter, you need a limiter. it's that simple.

The trade off with filters will always be that if you want a "wet" sound you must contend with volume spikes. To avoid them you can use a less resonant filter (or turn down the resonance) but then obviously the filter effect will be more mild.

The 3Leaf groove regulator is a great choice for people looking to avoid filter spikes while still having a smooth, fat and funky sound. Not a bad thing (unless you really want a super slurpy filter) but again, it is on the subtler side of things in terms of filters.

The 00Funk can get into that same range (with a slightly different character) by turning down the resonance or "Squelch" as it's labeled on the Chunk.

I'd recommend putting the Squelch down around 9 o'clock, the "Smoothness" a touch past noon and then discovering where to put the other two based on your playing style and how hot your bass is.

Try setting the "Pitch" knob almost all the way to the "low" side (around 8 or 9 o'clock or so) and set the sweep at minimum (all the way on the "Narrow side". Then play your bass as normal (the filter probably won't open) and gradually turn the sweep knob clockwise until you find the spot where the filter opens up the way you want it to based on your playing dynamics.

Hope that helps.
