So my cursury search didn't turn up much...
Does anyone know what direction to point me in for an
OD/fuzz/whatever to get that Clanky grind that Flea has on
some of those By the Way songs (By the Way, Can't Stop, etc)
This is all theoretical as I am not currently playing music that would warrant it, but hey, fun is fun right?
Thanks,
Joey |

Thanks,
Joey | I remember reading he uses a Boss ODB3. The clank is from his attack and types of basses he uses (MM style).

For that sound, I use my Ric 4003, strung with light gauge stainless roundwounds & a strong right hand attack, through a Tech-21 VT pedal set to my modded version of the SVT setting, & a "smiley curve" on the amp's graphic EQ.
To cop the Flea tone, it's my EBMM Stingray strung with heavy gauge nickle roundwounds & a medium right hand attack, through a moderately overdriven amp (tube preamp at 8, master at about 6, amp EQ fairly flat with a bit of bass boost), with a hair of low, mid & treble boost from the Stingray's on-board preamp. |

A bit of judicious eqing in the upper mids might help enhance it though.

On top of all my other pedals, the BDDI can get just the right amount of clank and chank on the fly....oh yah they also make a great DI... |

Around the world is a is a muff i think on the recording, an odb 3 live.
but really alot comes from the bass, the fact that flea uses new strings EVERY night (and has a heavy attack), and the amp.
However, pedals that 'clank' that I like:
Tech 21 sansamp bass driver
Tech 21 VT Bass
Tech 21 Leeds
Way Huge Pork Loin
Way Huge Green Rhino
Thats just stuff off the top of my head.
