Claypool-ish Envelope Filter

Sign in to disble this ad
Im after an envelope filter that will give me a similar sound to Claypool's Korg AX 300b. I have tried a Q-tron and a Dr Q with no prevail. I have a DOD FX25B which I really do like, and can get a pretty good claypoolish sound out of it. But the volume drop is too noticable to be able to use it with a band

Should I seek out a FX25 which i hear doesnt have the volume drop, or is there something else that i should look for??? It should be really over the top squelch and should be very sensitive to my playing

oh and i should mention, if anybody knows of a multi-effects that has decent envelope filter effects on it im open to buying anything

One of the demo sounds on the Zoom B2-B2.1u is very close to the Claypool sound #39 on the presets Thumb Bomb, perhaps that would do? I have a couple of variations on that sound that I use including other effects, there's 1 with Ring Mod is absolutely wicked.

The newish MXR Bass Envelope Filter is pretty darned versatile, and should give you what you want. Small and cheap, too.

ooh you shouldnt have said that about the B2, im really tempted to get one, they sound great, im just worried about how versatile it is for live use. my first pedal i ever own was a zoom 506II, which was great but so noisy and had a huge delay when swithing patches, not that it mattered because back then i was just a bedroom player =D

Better than the Les Thumbs pre set is using the Auto-filter in conjunction with the fuzz. That combo gives you a big fat squelchy sound a la late Claypool - Fancy DVD era. Love my little zoom (even if the AF was superseded by my new EHX Enigma!)

I think the groove regulator is also a very versatile filter, and you can put other effects in it's loop...

Effect switching on the new zooms is very fast and I don't have any issues with mine because it's programmed for performance.
