Cliff, creamy/smooth/buttery, distortion tone in '86

Hello all,

I've been wandering in and out of talkbass for quite some time now, and being a huge fan of Cliffy B (R.I.P), I have invested quite sometime into collecting as much solid info as possible on his gear, and hopefully, when I rack enough $$$ i'll be able to make some key purchases.

Anyways, I've always been trying to figure out how cliff got that amazingly smooth clean/buttery/distortion tone in this solo

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iAjyCsEFya4

Live at the Hammersmith Odeon, London, UK, six days before Cliff's death. The smooth tone I'm talking about starts with his wah sweep at (+/-) 1:35. I have also checked out quite a few morley power wah boost vids, and nobody seems to have replicated that sound so far. Is it even possible with the boost alone, or would you mainly have to factor in his other equipment, coz i've read that the boost (morley) is about 85-90% of his solo sounds. This sound also comes up in his Rockslide gig Solo when he is playing the same section. And btw those harmonics in the intro sick, not sure if tapping or artificial, but they go to show the brilliant Aria Pro II Sb sustain. Thanks in advance.

P.S I know you lurk around these forums quite alot, Fcbass, so i hope that you could help me figure this out seeing as you have quite truckload of cliff/jason gear, and this site seems like it would be easier to catch you than the alembic club. (love your alembics man)

That's definitely a cumulative effect there... I know lots of people say the majority of the sound is in the wah, but that certainly isn't everything. Of course, if you try using another wah, even with the rest of the gear, you'll fall short.

I have a copy of the live audio from that show... his tone was awesome, and quite different than what's on the albums. That also has an impact on the result.

thats a crazy bass solo - i know he used a Morely power wah (the big silver one) and ricks and aria basses, roundwounds and the Mesa 400+ skullcrusher

that would probably do it

Hi,

The thing is I've checked out FCbass's version of anesthesia, and he pretty much has cliffs rig/amp/bass/effects, yet he still does not sound the same or similar to the live version (he sounds perfect for the studio recording which was done on a ricky, oddly enough), it might be his use of a pick, but I highly doubt it. And yea, Boo, I agree that that tone is due to to a combination of sounds, and not just the wah, but people still seem to have a problem getting that tone, even if they have the same exact darn equipment.
