Clipping methods

I'm interested in building a pedal and I was just looking at this schematic:



Why aren't there any diodes? Can transistors be used for clipping also? What's the difference?

Trannies can distort depending on their and how they're biased. I load the trannies in my Free Candy circuit and have no diodes!
