I was wondering if anybody knew what effects pedal or amp i would need to get the right sort of sound for the bass ??

It definitely sounds to me like a stacked distortion, e.g. a distortion pedal into a fuzz pedal, or a distortion pedal into a driven tube amp, or two cranked tube drive pedal in series, etc. More than one source of distortion, and probably two different flavors--one into the other. Experiment, it shouldn't be hard to get there.

I don't know if this really helps much, but his live board has a Boss LS-2, Boss Ds-1, EHX NYC Muff, and an EHX Octave Multiplexer.

I was gonna say i've read in something where he said he used that board.
