Colorsound Tonebender project

Sign in to disble this ad
So, I just convinced my friend who is going to be studying electrical/computer engineering (or somethinglikethat) at college next year to try making a colorsound tonebender or bass fuzz clone. We have two questions: What model of the tonebender should we use (there seems to be so many, before looking up schematics I didn't know they were so prolific), and what kind of modifications would be worth doing to them, known issues, stuff like that.

Heres the schematic we'll probably end up using for the bass fuzz if he makes that as well. If this pans out I'll be sure to post some recordings of it.

Hi there,

I've built a Jumbo Tonebender using close to this layout:

As it is, it sounds great on bass. The schematic you listed looks like it would work fine as well.

Anything particular about them that is worth changing? I have no experience using them so were both kind of in the dark about the end product (he doesn't play guitar or bass and I've never used a fuzz pedal :P)

I personally like the mk1, it can get some great gated synth sounds. Not very versatile though! The mk3 is great also, though more towards big muff territory in my opinion.

His is a reissue (I think) Jumbo Tonebender. That's why I built mine!

Oh awesome. Thanks for the link, I'll send it to my friend now. While he was waiting for me he built a prototype for a MKII circuit board already.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure the newer ones that Colorsound started making in the mid-2000s are a reissue of the Jumbo. Colorsound made a Supa and a Jumbo back in the day. I think the current "Bass Fuzz" is their reissue of the Supa.

Nope, it's a tweaked Jumbo (I know it from Anthony Macaris himself).

Yellow is loaded with germanium transistors while grey/blue one with silicon.

Colorsound makes also bass version:
