Compressor

EQ

What exactly do those pedals do? In my currant band we play funk and classis rock. I have a Micro Qtron, OC-2, DOD Distortion, and am looking for my other "mandatory" pedals.

Other than a tuner, which I will get soon enough, are a compressor and/or EQ needed?

These are answered by the good Harmony Central links in the Effects FAQ sticky.

What is EQ
http://www.harmony-central.com/Effec.../Equalization/

What is Compression
http://www.harmony-central.com/Effec...s/Compression/

Check out the rest of the stuff in the sticky here. It's a wealth of information.

If you don't know what else you need, you probably don't need anything else at the moment.

Jordasch, I gave you a pretty strong hint yesterday, but I guess it went over your head. Look in my sig. There is a FAQ there. It answers both of your questions.

Thanks Bongo, but I dont remember the hint you gave to me yesterday? If I would have seen it, I would have pursued what you said.

But thanks guys, ill be sure to look into it.

EDIT: I read the Harmony Central FAQ. I havent gotten through Bongo's yet. The compressor is exactly what I thought, a pedal that evens out all input so that no matter how hard or soft a note is hit, they all have the same output.

This is what I originally thought, but I wasnt sure.

Compressor is the most maddening effect to me. I've never liked compression. I don't know if I've only used terrible compressors or what. The only compressor I've tried that I liked was a Black Finger and it was kind of like getting a new bass for me. It tweaked my tone a little, had a little different feel, but was too subtle for me to justify the money required to buy it when there were so many other effects that would really change the tone and feel of a song (all the basses I want are into the $1000 range, and that is just not going to happen when I can swap the effects gear I've built up).

I've liked compression on my recordings when an engineer put his stamp on my sound, but he had some time to tweak and a multi grand rack unit (that I never found out the name of). I'm not building a rack, and I'm not spending a couple grand on a compressor.

What makes it so maddening is hearing people swear by compression as the be-all-end-all of tone when it has been either detrimental or only a minor improvement to my tone. I say this only because you say you are looking for your 'mandatory' pedals, but I submit that there are none. You will know if it is mandatory by your inability to stop using it. IMO.

Good luck in your search.
