| | | | compare the distortion from Holy Stain vs Enigma Qballs

I'm looking to introduce just a very subtle amount of filter to some lower whole root notes at certain parts in songs, & I've narrowed it down to the MXR bass envelope filter or the EHX Enigma Qballs.
I like the MXR's ability to independently mix in 100% dry signal & just a touch of effect, as opposed to working with a blend knob.
The only reason I'm considering the Qballs (aside from the expression pedal input I'm only kind of thinking I'd use) is the distortion circuit it has. I've got an EHX Holy Stain which cranks out a very wooly, almost synth kind of fuzz that I use occassionally, but as I'm sure you all know, the quest for bass grit is a neverending journey.
If the Qballs distortion sounds like the Holy Stain, or can't be engaged without filter, I can go with the MXR & be done. If, however, it is its own beast, I may have to buy both so I can A/B them, & return one (hopefully I can part with one after they're both in my hands).
Can anyone share their insights or experiences with any of these pedals? |

I've gotten some nice, fat fuzz tones without the filter sweep.

As Filterfunk mentions, the Enigma CAN be used to set a fixed filter - and if you set a fixed lowpass filter at a highish frequency (and low resonance) it will be close to transparent. unfortunately, you'll have to make a bunch of adjustments when you want to use the enigma for a more traditional filter sound |

| | | | It seems like what I'm hearing is that I'd be happier with the MXR because the distortion isn't independent on a Qballs, & therefore what I want it for (the subtle filter under low, root whole notes) can be achieved with the MXR!
Thanks, guys. |
