What would you recommend, price not being a factor?

I have the Fender and the Ampeg Plugins. The Fender one has very limited Bass tones but i found more use for it than i did the Ampeg. I want my money back on that one. The Ampeg one truly is an amazing example of what you pray doesnt happen to your tone...I say this because i expect folks to recommend it to you in this thread.
The line 6 i have only heard through a friends setup. Didnt do much for me.
Maybe you wont like this next part...8)
I honestly believe you are going to find the best results if you focus on having a Quality Tube or SS preamp/ DI into --> Good Audio Interface.
I go from there into Logic 8 with Tritone Digital Colortone plugin, and Sonalksis compressor. Thats it.
The Colortone plugin does way more for my bass tone than anything else i have seen yet. I have demoed a ton of plugins too. Its like that subtle finishing touch every track needs 8)
Thats the best advice i can offer for home recording at this moment in time
Try demos first!

Also check out the Valvetone plug they make. its very sweet as well.

azarias is absolutely right! good tube or ss pre to good sound card is what you need!

I used both POD XT for and Fender Amplitube for the last 6 months, have done some recordings, but I wasn't happy about my tone. It was like "just ok".

But when I got SansAmp VT-Bass my tone became like "WOW!". I posted some clips here

I do have a little collection of Tube Pres (Presonus, Behringer, ART). I hadn't really thought about using those with instruments, more as Mic pres but that makes sense.
