If you want an all in one there's the EHX Bass Metaphors but I can't really recommend it. There are any number of digital multi effects that can do "comp" eq and amp sim but really the best compression is going to come from a dedicated unit. There are tons of eq/amp sim products on the market. You'll have to search and/or be more specific as to what sort of tone you're looking for, digital modeling, analog emulation, clean, dirty, vintage, hi-fi, etc.

Thanks Swift,

Guess I dot really know what kind of tone I'm looking for. I go through cycles, it seems, of playing guitar foe 6-8 months here, then playing bass for a season here. Recently just got back to a season of bass. I guess I would like something that is not a pain to move around, budget/ wife friendly, and works great directly into a PA. On board (but quality) XLR capabilitys would be swell.

Did I just say swell?

Versatility is key as well, because I am not dedicated to one genre and have a dream of creating new sounds, new genres................ etc.

I think the Zoom B2 is a decent way to go. It works great for bass and guitar and does just about everything. There are some noise issues sometimes and the signal and "bypass" are digitally compressed so that everything sounds like a recording rather than a live signal but it's quite possibly better in this respect than many others. The compressor actually creates the impression of compression without actually compressing but this may work just fine. I got a lot of crazy sounds out of mine while I had it. Check the myspace link in my sig for a sampling of some of it's capabilities.

If you can, you should also check out the Celmo Sardine Can. It's a compressor that also includes some nice overdrive voicings and treble boost; it works well on bass but is insanely good for guitar. Obviously overdrive and treble boost aren't exactly "EQ and amp sim", but for an all-in-one-pedal item it's pretty sweet, especially since you go back and forth between instruments.

I'm sometimes seen on Gearslutz and TGP, but I like it here better.
