compressing a DI to the PA

Sign in to disble this ad
I have been using my own compressor pre DI for a while but I have to ask soundmen to try a song without adding their own compression to the bass (post DI). (I use in ear monitors often so I hear the house eq/effects on the bass). I'm wondering if this is unusual. I would think that anyone who mic's an amp and using compression has the same situation.

I asked one soundman his opinion of my approach and whether it made his job harder. He said it depends on the player but he does appreciate it with the more sensitive players (sensitive to dynamics that is).

Thanks for your input.

I also use a bit of compression (BBE Sonic Stomp) before my DI (BassBone). I too use in-ears, but through an aviom unit and the signal split before and not affected by the FOH board, so I like have some comp first.

So you're in-ear monitor mix is post-fader? if so, it might be helpful to try to get it changed so you can play with the tone you want. I've noticed with in-ears (which I use almost everyday), I have to really dial in the tone that I like, otherwise, I just won't play as well.

^i thought the Sonic Stomp was a phase alignment pedal? that's different from what a compressor does iirc.

Seems like communication is the key. If you are friendly with the soundman and let them know politely that your signal is already compressed, seems like that should be not so much of an issue for them. It's not like EQ, where you want different results onstage and in the PA.
