Compression or no compression?

Sign in to disble this ad
Im thinking of getting a compression pedal as i want to even out and enhance my sound, particularly in the mix of a band.

After reading through the threads and reviews i think i want to get either;

Boss LMB-3

or

BBE Opto Stomp

which is the better of the 2? The most transparent but effective?

Would you say even light compressing is better than using no compression at all?

I really just want to maximise my bass sound.

what are your thoughts?

Thanks guys

Only you can tell whether you like compression. I suspect from what I've read, though I haven't used either, that the Opto Stomp would be better than the LMB-3 for subtle always on compression. Have you checked out http://www.ovnilab.com/index.shtml ?

Hi Swift, yeah i think i like it but dont necessarily feel like i need it, if you know what i mean? I was thinking the opto stomp would be better for a constant effect, and wanted a 2nd oppinion.

How would you compare it to the MXR Super Comp? I understand that the MXR is very strong - would maybe be too much for my subtle needs? As thats the 3rd one i narrowed down to after reading bongo's reviews and tips.

How would you compare the 3 Bongo? I understand they are all ok at what they do, but what would you recomend as a leave on all the time subtle/transparent compressor?

Many thanks

Bongomania's reviews of these pedals make them sound pretty different from each other. Basically, everything depends on whether you want to use the compressor in a purely corrective way for loud notes, or whether you want to do serious dynamics-shaping on all of your notes. Order both (or all three) pedals, try them out in a band setting, and return the one(s) that don't make the cut.

I have tried the Dyna Comp and it is not very subtle nor is it especially well suited for bass. It looses some low.
