That's funny, because every time I record drums or guitars or vocals...and any time I mix down and master a track I find myself thinking that compression makes things suck less.

I live between AUburn and Ithaca, do you own or work at a studio? I am nearly ready to record a full length album.

The only time I've heard it like that is when it was set improperly.

Keep in mind, if you are using a tube amp or distortion/overdrive you're using compression in your chain. If you're using both tubes AND distortion, there's definitely compression in your signal chain.

That being said, I generally try to get most of my compression 'naturally' meaning: from my preamp and overdrives.

Nope. I have a bunch of my own gear that I use for my own and my band's edification.

Were I in the position to go into a local studio these days, my choice would be this guy: More Sound Studio is Recording Studio based in Syracuse New York

In Ithaca, I've used Pyramid, which is obviously a well known room...otherwise I've always wanted to record with this guy: Electric Wilburland

Jocko will be at least mixing the album, as you know he is the man. I recorded ten songs with him a few years ago. I want to keep the cost down some what on tracking. i have a lot of experience with recording so i know how important room, mics and preamps are i just don't have the budget. The new Subcat studio is amazing, but i have never been blown away by any recording i have heard out of there.

Oh right as not to change the thread. Compression all in the user, good news is no one has to like it.

Subcat gets a lot of play because they're new and shiny. I personally would rather record with Jocko, I really like what he did for Thunderbody, I think his drums sounds are great. I also thought he did good for Sophistafunk, though I know that Adam and Emmanuel already had their sounds under control pretty well.

I plan to email Adam to see if he is interested in doing some session work. I dig his playing a lot. Unless Ivan neville shows up at my door step

They're in Chicago tonight, Kentucky last night...workin' their way out west and back I believe. If he doesn't work out, I'd consider Mark Nanni...He's a nice guy and also has wicked chops. Of course Adam is a complete gear whore, so for vintage keys and sounds, he's got it.

Compression sucks your quiet notes up to the level of your loud notes.

Fixed.
