compressor for DI home recording

Sign in to disble this ad
Want to run a compressor between my bass and my ashdown LB30, I'm using the amps DI for recording.

The lite version I'm using of sonar recording software does not come with any compressors, so I'm going to have to use compression at this early stage.

was initially thinking of the mxr dynacomp, but it has a set compression level.

I'll second that ... but I opt to go no compression mostly. With some practice, it's easy to track bass without any need for eq or compression, much easier than tracking vocals or drums. It's worth spending some time working on.

The Dynacomp is utter crap for bass. Check out the reviews linked in my sig.

+1 billion

I have one and it's great for chicken picking stuff on a Strat or Tele. It simple mutates a bass tone.

Bongo is the Comp King!
FWIW I am getting really satisfying results for a Blue LED Opto Stomp.

We use a Presonus compressor which does a passable job on anything we've used it on, but wouldn't it be cheaper and probably more useful down the line to just buy a program with plugins?

I have fought battles with compressors for 25 years. I honestly think I have bought and sold at least 20 different ones over the years.

IMO, the Markbass Compressore is the best compressor available for general use. I absolutely love mine. It is capable of adding more transparent compression that anything else I have ever played around with. I have recorded with it twice, and now play with it live all the time.

Sonar or Cubase retail around 500€ in Europe, I've already forked out close to 1000€ on my computer and superior drummer software.

Don't want to over do it, because I'm trying to keep this project as organic as possible, most of the stuff that's being played today is too polished/compressed IMHO and sounds stale/dead.

Thanks for the info guys.

There are a lot of good/decent/great freeware software compressors on the market as well...
