Compressor for fretless ABG (jazz) ?

Sign in to disble this ad
I play jazz on a full sized fretless ABG. Even though my string to string volume is good, my bass looses a little volume when I play up the neck in higher registers.

This can be more or less apparent depending on room acoustics and the sensitivity of the drummer. It’s frustrating to get buried on solos. Also I tend to play a bit lighter for faster runs than when I'm digging in on the comping.

Subsequently, I was thinking about trying a Compulator to even out the volume and/or a MXR micro amp as a boost for solos.

I've read all the reviews here and from Bongo.
Do you guys feel that the Compulator the best compressor specifically for acoustic piezo applications? Any other suggestions?

Thanks

Although the Compulator is an excellent choice IMO as you know already, I actually think you might benefit more from a booster pedal for during your solos. Also, you can use most comp pedals (including the Dem) as a booster, kicking it on and off as needed.

I'll get a micro amp first. That should solve much of my problems. Here in France, I can't try out a Compulator. I'll have to bite the bullet and ship one over. (anybody?)

Even though I just want to smooth my volume a little, I do like the idea that it might fatten up the low mids a little at the same time.

As far as piezos go, I saw this in a review:

"...This pedal can also really help the sound of pickup-equipped acoustic guitars, especially active piezo types. Try a little of this pedal on your Fishman/Taylor pickup systems to get rid of some of the harsh dynamics and piezo "quack."

That really perks my curiosity!!!
