Compressor Problem

Sign in to disble this ad
Okay guys. Some of you may have read my thread about my GK MB2-500 having power problems and creating fuzz.

I got my new one today, and its awesome. No fuzz at all... except when I use my compressor. It makes it sound like its going to explode.

Any ideas?

Is your comp set for unity gain? (Same overall signal level whether the pedal is engaged or bypassed) And what comp is it, and how are you powering it?

Um.. Ill have to research the "unity gain" a bit. I should have just PMd you Bongo.

Its the Ashdown Dual Band Comp. I love it to death, as I think it and my EQ make my bass come to life, but I cant live with the fuzz.

Hang on, you're getting explosion sounds and you don't want it?

Also, when'd you get/make that fancy plexi board?

Took you long enough. I got the board itself done on the date of my NCPD day thread, but I have been buying and collecting pedals for a few months now.

ITs not that I dont want the sound, its that it cant be good for the cab or head. Its fuzzing out notes.

I just got unbanned like two days ago, so I've missed an awful lot of fun.

Your board looks like, Wah, Q Tron, and a bunch of pedals I can't identify. I see no Muff, though, what happened?

And the fuzziness might not be bad for the head or the cab, but I can't say either way without hearing it.

It goes:
Dunlop 105Q > BOss OC-2 > Micro Qtron > Ashdown Dual Band Compressor > Big Bass Muff > Ibanez DE-7 > Boss GEB-7

Check out page 7 of my NCPD thread to see the newest pics, not the first page.

Im still getting a bit of fuzz. Should I pull off a YouTube clip to try and show it? I dont have a recording unit as of now.

Here ya go.. not a very good video, as Im terribly sleepy and just played that off the top of my head.

It gets the point across, the fuzz can really be heard.

A Danelectro 9volt power supply I got at a local shop. My 1SPOT only powers 5 pedals, and I dont have the cash to buy a bigger divider at the moment.

Could that be the problem?

You might check what the ma draw of the ashdown is, and what the dan power supply actually delivers.

I just looked all over the ashdown site to try and find the draw with no luck. It may be somewhere on the pedal. Did you try using your 1spot with it at all? You might try a different power supply as well. It could also be your settings on the compressor. Does it clip like that on any setting?

It could be your bass is too hot for the pedal.

I had one of those pedals too. If you turn up the input enough for it to trigger, it farts like anything. I then found out it was a common problem. Ashdown apparently design the circuit with low output passive basses in mind, and were offering a free modding service for hot output basses.

I had mine modded, and guess what. Still farts. I personally think it's a bit of a crap pedal TBH, which doesn't compress that well anyway. I'd recommend looking at Bongo site for info for something better.
