Compressor Similar To "Tube Comp" on Line6 M-Series?

Sign in to disble this ad
I recently picked up a Line 6 m5 and have primarily been using it as a compressor using the Tube Comp model. I use it primarily to even out levels on my drop C tuned basses at a fairly low threshold. I would like to purchase a standalone compressor pedal so that I can take advantage of the other effects on the M5 (mainly the octaver and pitch shifters). Any recommendations? I've heard good things about the new BBE Opto Stomp but other suggestions would be welcome. Budget is around $150.

Thanks!

I think the Line6 Constrictor pedal/module has the same program as the "tube comp" in the M series. So that would be the cheap and direct approach. If you want analog, there are lots of options--check the reviews link in my sig, and the many many threads we have here on the subject.

If you like the Tube Comp on the M5, you may want to consider this: M5 + separate compressor pedal = M9 (in terms of $$$)

I suggest this because you also mentioned there are other models on the M5 that you wish to use. With an M9 you could keep your favorites ready to rock!

EBS makes a comp pedal with the "Tube Drive" mode on it that sounded fantastic! Though you would probibly have to search used to find it under $150 (last I knew they were $200 new)

I've seen the Mark Bass Compressore go used for 150 or so. If you want tube comp, that'll do you.

I have this debate with myself all the time. Want to try some effects and comMpression is one that would be on a lot. By the time you get an m5 and a comPressor you may as well get the m9. That's why I have done nothing;-)

Well that setting is modeling a Teletronix LA-2A... of course it's not a pedal, or $150.

I really like the BBE OptoStomp though. I went through a phase of trying out dozens of compressors, and even bought a few that were way more expensive and ended up selling them. The BBE sounded the best and you can find them used for about $50

Not to de-rail this thread but...

Is the tube-comp model in the M series comparable to a separate compressor pedal? I've been debating with myself whether or not I can get away with just an M9/M13, or be better off with a Markbass Compressore + an M9/M13.

I realize it probably isn't a fair comparison, but the OP seems pretty happy with the M-series compression.

IMO the M series comp is not even close to the control and sound achieved with the compressore.

I agree. The BBE is pretty nice, especially for the price. Mine is with a friend right now and I'm debating asking for it back.

EBS MultiComp on "Tube" setting IME. However I sold mine when I got my ex M13. The modeled version was just as good.

I have been debating this myself. I have an M9 and want to use the tube comp on it but its so hot that you need to turn it way down and Im not sure its even doing much at that point. I would check out Bongo's website for excellent reviews. I am going to pick up a Compressore I think...

Yeah, and my main basses are G&Ls (L2000/L2500) and their output is way hot on its own.

IMHO, the compressors are the least quality thing on an M5/M9/M13 when it comes to bass. None of them meet the standards of most any stand alone compressor pedals i've owned.
