compressors with filters.

after months of playing straight ahead jazz on drums and (forgive me, effects junkies ) orchestral music on DB, i've finally gotten a job that will require the ole' pedalboard comes out to play.

a bunch of my cabinets have blown speakers. the #1 culprit is my lime green DOD FX25. i decided its about time, i'll give in and get a compressor.

so i got a boss LMB-3. no complaints about it, its a nice little compressor and im satisfied. however, using it along with the FX25 just ruins the effect!

i think the volume spike is half the fun. i dont want to damage my speakers, so i'll compromise, but i've been finding the effect of turning on the loop with the compressor and filter in it to be half as huge and funky as it used to be. i keep turning off the compressor and going "ahhh yes.. thats the sound alright"

anyone else feel this way? i dont really want to go in raw, without any limiter to protect my rigs, but boy do i miss that sound..

The DOD Filter is controlled by the input volume. When you put a compressor in front of it, you limit the range of input volume into the DOD Filter, thus limiting the range of the filter.

Try putting the compressor AFTER the filter.

It is a very fine balancing act. The uber filter sound really is dependent on the massive resonant peak at the filter's tuned frequency; yet that peak really does cause speakers to fart out and clip. So it will always be a compromise, and you have to dial and tweak until you find the sweet spot.

The best results I've gotten personally were with a very high ratio and a very high threshold. The max ratio will cap off anything that exceeds the threshold; so you set the threshold just below the point where your speakers start to fart out.

The wet/dry control on my 3Leaf GR2 helps reduce the volume spike to some extent (I prefer to blend in some of the unprocessed signal), however if you're looking for a fully processed sound this approach might not give you what you want.

If it is already after (though in that case, the beahviour you're describing sounds akward to me), then try lowering very slightly the threshold on the filter.
