Compressors with squishy "Bwap"

Sign in to disble this ad
Call me crazy, but I'm looking for a compressor that will give an over compressed, squishy, syrupy sound that I describe as "bwap" because it kinda sounds like the sound you get. The 7 band Trace Elliott head (new version) gets that sound when you go over 2 or 3 on the Compresor control, but I'm looking for a pedal that gets the same sound. And if it sounds good with less compression, that's an obvious plus.

Thanks for any advice!

The first options that come to mind are an Orange Squeezer clone, Jacques Fat Burner, Boss CS-1, or an EHX Black/White Finger. They all have compromises, heavy compression will always have compromises, but there are definitely pedals that go "bwap". I'll skim my reviews to see if I recall any other specific ones.

Sweet. I was just viewing your page -- great resource. I think Tony Levin used an Orange Squeezer back during the Peter Gabriel "So" era. He even had one attached to his Stingray according to one picture I saw.

Many thanks!

How did I miss this quote on your review of the Fat Burner:

"It's also perfect for the Tony Levin sound."

Time for a birthday present. ;-)

I concur with the Fat Burner thing.

I've mostly tried to avoid 'sqishy bwap' as much as possible. Sounds like something that a good dose of Pepto Bismol might help out.

I am looking into the Pedal Doctor Tangerine squeeze based on Bongos review and the info on their site. the thing is there are no bass sound clips. I am looking for a compressor to leave on all the time, although I would like to try one out before I buy, I don't think anyone around me carries these things!

sorry for the hijack, but mayb you should check this pedal out, it seems pretty cool!

i can get that bwap from my Alesis nano compressor. it's 1/3 rack, not a pedal.
I really like the control you can get with the nano. I use it more to even up my sound, and get some extra sustain. I set it and rarly change anything

As Bongo mentioned, the Black Finger is an excellent choice, although I gave mine up for a Trex Squeezer, another excellent choice.

Indeed! My favorite Effectish Compressor... TL is a huge influence.

if you are handy with a soldering iron... hit www.tonepad.com for an Orange Squeezer board and order the bits and pieces for the "Bass Mod" listed here by Bongo or in the build notes on tonepad. Order the box predrilled and powdercoated from www.pedalpartsplus.com for even more ease.

I had mine built... but would do it myself next time.

I tried this out at a local store:
http://www.diamondpedals.com/products/compressor.html

It sounds really good, but since it's intended for guitar, it had way too much squishy bwap for me... You might love it.

So, do these squishy compressors do Punchy at all?

I want to hear soundclips of these things on bass, but everything is guitar this guitar that!

Is there any rackmount OS clones out there?

Thanks for the links. I'd like to try building it, but I really have no idea what I'm doing when it comes to a soldering iron.

I'm on the wait list for an analogman bi-comp. It's what Tony uses now, so I guess that makes it Tlev certified.

Anything that has controls for: attack, release, ratio, threshold should be able to do what you want. Don't know any pedals offhand that have that much control but I'm sure there are a few. Most studio rack units will do it, I used to use the Symetrix 201 often.
