Convert from Battery to "Boss" type barrel?

Sign in to disble this ad
Say I get a Big Muff that runs only on a 9 volt battery and I want to use the daisy chain power from my Boss TU-2 that powers my BBE Opto Stomp and other Boss (CEB-3) and MXR (Phase 90) pedals. Is there a simple do it yourself way to do this. An adapter that plugs into the battery and then hangs out for the barrel or something?

Yeah those adapters do exist (see the green packet here) but they tend to fail if you plug/un-plug them more than a couple of times.

there are adapters for that, powerall and what not provide them

my big muffs both had ac options, beware though it looks like a headphone jack. AND there is an adapter for that too

IIRC the Sovtek Muffs only have battery clips - no AC connection at all.

+1, and the same is true for the later Russian Big Muffs, too. I assume Steve must be picking up a non-U.S. one, or a really, really old U.S. one.

I'm not sure of the exact model - there are so many - but it's black, 3 knobs, no jack that I can see other than in and out. Looking at it for Ben Folds and a few other things. I like the sound of it cranked. Really fuzzy. I think Robert used 2 of these. One for "normal" fuzz and one for the really over the top stuff like Song for the Dumped, Army, stuff like that.

Yeah when I had my old Muff I basically played the intro from 'Uncle Walter' on it a few times with a big grin on my face, then set up a clean blend with a Boss LS-2 to make it practical, then found out the Pickle Pie 'B' did all that in a much smaller footprint and sold it.

I wonder if I'd be better off with a Sans Amp PBDDI. I am looking at getting a Blue Tube pedal and a Muff so I can have "regular" overdrive for just a slight growl for rock stuff and the Muff for over the top. However, I could get a PBDDI and have one be clean, one growly and one over the top. I'm not a huge SansAmp fan. I've had a couple and seem to sell them, but maybe its and economical - both financially and space wise -way to get this on a pedal board.

It's ages since I had a Bass Driver DI but I don't remember it being capable of Muff-type fuzz, if that's what you're considering (having the programmable BDDI do all your "dirty work"). I think if you've got a Muff that already works for you, it would be best to stick with it and find the other pieces of the jigsaw elsewhere.

I don't have any OD/Fuzz/Distortion yet. The sample on the Tech21 site is pretty Muffy.

IME, the PBDDI isn't the ideal choice for over-the-top gain, but it can get pretty dirty with a good active bass to drive it. The major drawback (or upside, depending on your personal tastes) is the extensive tonal coloration it provides. Remember that it IS a miked amp emulator - not just a programmable "overdrive" pedal.

Yeah, I didn't like the 2 I had so...

The sound I like is the Pod Tube Preamp, with a little compression (10:00 o'clock) and a little drive - about 10:00 o'clock as well. Nice, solid tone with just a little edge. It's barely even breaking up. Hard to describe.

I'm tempted to get a Pod just for that. Maybe use some effects when needed - like the Muff.
