Cop This Tone: Aaliyah feat. Timbaland - Try Again

First off, yes I know it's a synth line. But does anybody have any insight on how to get close to this tone via pedals? Light octave/tight gated fuzz? The decay and the kinda 'farting out' sound off the longer held notes is what I'm really wondering about. Is that some type of oscillator? Are there any pedals that can do that type of thing well? Thanks

a track might help: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nEF_-IcnQC4

It's a tough sound to cop, no doubt. There are several pedals that can do that tight, gated fuzz sound (the Chunk Brown Dog and Lovetone Big Cheese/OLC Chunky Cheese for instrance) but it also sounds like there are two octaves in the signal, and not necessarily a dirty sounding analog octaver. I wonder if a microPog would be the ticket.

Still, it does sound like there's a synth envelope there that would be hard to double. But it comes down to "how close do I need to get" relative to the actual sound. If the answer is "very close" then you'd be best served with an actual synth.
