Counter-part to ODB-3?

Sign in to disble this ad
I need some guidance. I just bought an ODB-3, and I love how it sounds. It's so heavy and cutting, plus there's a blend on it. In fact, I like it better than the Cherry Pop I just picked up. However, I also feel like I should have a fuzz pedal, but I'm picky to the point that I don't even know what I should be looking for anymore.

So this isn't a "what fuzz should I get" thread, but more of a "What type should I be looking for?" I play in a post-rock band, and my bandmates actually encourage me to use effects (I'll often hear "Jaymes, why don't you have any pedals in front of you?"). I plan on keeping a simple pedal board, but is there anything another fuzz pedal can do that I'd be missing with the ODB-3? Obviously, yes, but what?

Please, oh masters of effects. Guide me in my search for fuzz.

Well there are octave up fuzzes: B:assmaster, Attack Goat, TZ-2

There are muff based fuzzes: EHX BBM, Supercollider, swollen pickle

There are synthy gated fuzzes: Mastotron, Woolly mammoth, brown dog, supermassive black hole

Then there are fuzzed mixed with effects such as filters, ring mods, etc: Heliotrope, Noisebox, Antenna

This is just scratching the surface, but will give you something to search from.

I'm a fan of either a Russian Muff or the DOD FX52 "Classic Fuzz" going into my ODB-3.

For classic fuzz, the BBM is a great buy.

If you want something really versatile for the money that can do pseudo "gated" articulate synthy fuzz, I would HIGHLY recommend the MXR Blow Torch. It's a fantastic box with more usable sounds/$ than any other pedal I own or have owned by far

I've always wanted to try out a Blowtorch. It's funny, because I already know a lot about all these fuzzes you guys have listed, but I just couldn't really figure out what I'm looking for. And I still can't.

I feel like the ODB-3 is kind of middle ground between 'cutting' and 'wall of fuzz'. Although I guess noisy, wall of fuzz would be useful to have for my band. Or maybe octave-up fuzz.

I avoided the Blow Torch for so long because of it's voltage requirement. I am sooooo glad that I just sucked it up though. It's a toss up between the Blow Torch and the Brown Dog as my most useful fuzz at the moment.

I'd say go for the B:Assmaster. It cuts through the mix like no other, isn't picky about where it is placed in the signal chain, and doesn't have feedback problems (even with hollow bodies).

I use my odb with geb-7, boss bass chorus, boss flanger, ns-2, and a dunlop bass crybaby. I get all sorts of sounds with that.

The Electro Harmonix Bass Big Muff, as mentioned lots above, is a great fuzz pedal and it is a perfect counter part to my ODB-3.

ODB-3 -> BBM (Dry mode) = AWESOME.

There's a 12AX7 loaded English Muff'n avail. in the classifieds here that you might like. Mine sounds bad ass with (or without) my ODB-3 (IMHO...YMMV...etc).

There's also a Tortuga Sasquatch floating around in there that'd prolly make your bandmates say "Jaymes, *** was THAT effect you just stepped on (and where can I get one)?!" once you step on that "Make Him Mad" switch. I might've snagged that one myself if I didn't have a SuperCollider OSC Beast comming in around the end of the month.

HTH and Good Luck.

My Pigtronix Disnortion has 6 fuzz shapes in parallel with a great overdrive, both before an octave distortion...kinda like a Green Ringer.

When I put the bassballs on in front I can get some really sweet glidey harmonic sounding distortions without playing harmonics, just digging in the right way...
