I'm assuming since you mention the Radial and Countryman that you're looking for purely clean tone; but if you wanted "tube sound" or any other tone shaping, there is a whole 'nother world of questions to ask too.
If all you need is a simple, reliable, clean DI, then you can't go wrong with either the Radial or Countryman. Note however that Radial makes a wide range of DI's with similar names (JDI,JDV,J48,ProDI,Pro48,etc.), so be sure you are picking the one best suited to your needs. I think their "J" series is supposedly better quality than their "Pro" series, but I haven't compared them myself. Here's a pdf from Radial comparing their J48 to the Countryman: http://radialeng.com/pdfs/Radial-BlueReport-on-DIs.pdf |

The Radial Pro would be the respectable choice. I use the JDI w/my active basses and couldn't be happier. I'm sure the Radial Pro would be similar. They just use their own transformer for that one.

Can anyone tell me why exactly you need a different DI with a passive or active bass? It's it just an optimization thing - live in clubs it seems that one DI fits all.
Thanks!

But you may find that your bass works better with one type or the other. For example, some people find that their passive bass, through a passive DI, doesn't have a hot enough signal at the FOH mixer input. And some people find that their active bass with a hot output distorts when using an active DI. But those won't be the case for all people/basses/DI's/etc., it's specific to your rig and needs. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
