Covering RATM/Limp Bizkit ....what od to use?

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm playing a few covers with friends this weekend for a friends birthday party, its just for fun and the short set is mostly RATM/LB covers as these were a couple of his fave bands back in the day when he was a teenager. the rage stuff is mostly from the first album, so my 3eq stingray has me covered. i'll be standard/dropped d for the rage stuff and i'll drop the e to c# for the bizkit stuff....but i was gonna go with my guvnor II as my od. its been my od of choice for many years now but i do have a russian muff and boss bass od in my collection. i also have a bass pod...but thats a recent addition for home use...and have never gigged with it....would now be the time?

i'll also be compressing with my aphex punch factory, and i've always put it first...but as i've never tried to really cop tim c's tone before would this be correct?

given the choice what would you do?

the amp will be an ashdown evo 500 4x10 combo by the way.

For the Rage stuff, I'd definitely go with the Guv'nor. For the Bizkit stuff, I don't think Sam used any drive pedals. Probably just a cranked SVT, I'll bet

I am going to say Tech 21 VT Bass. Probably won't nail TC tone exactly, but will probably get you in the ball park. Plus, it can do so many different driven amp tones. Should be a good choice for both.

A VT Bass is pretty useful when intending to use a VT Bass for an imminent gig, which i don't think he has from the above post.

id say just go with the guvnor and take the odb-3 as a backup for it's versatility, you wont get a guvnor tone but good enough for a friends birthday

if you like the results your getting from the pod then use that

only what i've mentioned in the op, i'm not buying something with 2 days notice for one gig!

i've never used the pod other than connected to my pc, with crappy pc speakers. so i may just combine the pod with the guvnor for the hell of it.

A couple of the songs on the first album are fun. My previous band played "Pollution" at a gig once, and it went over well

Timmy C used the Guv'nor all over the first Rage album, so that's what I'd use given that you already have one in your posession! It might drop some lows, maybe boosting them from your Stingray might be in order when using the distortion.

I would take the OD pedals you have and mess around with them while playing with your guitarist and see which settings work the best. Depends if you want to emulate the songs as close to the original as possible, or if you want to put your own twist on it. Like if your guitarist is using mad distortion (more than Morello) or too little distortion (less than Borland) then you'd need to adjust accordingly.

I cover both those bands in my 90s cover band.

I use the Bass Big Muff in the "dry" mode for the distorted Rage stuff. Limp Bizkit is 100% clean. (Although we only do one song- thank goodness)

I used to use the guvnor II pedal, Id say its your safest bet to get the rage tone, I had no problem. I miss that pedal, actually thinking about picking one up again. This is years after playing clean no pedals.

Thanks for all the advice. i had to learn the songs last night at home so, due to volume restrictions i opted for the guvnor II into the pod into the pc, monitoring with headphones. i then downloaded a tim c patch for the pod from the line 6 site. i then used cubase and had the dry pod signal on one track and the patch on the other. when i switched in the guvnor it od'ed them both. to say i got in the ballpark is an understatement!

i then just adjusted the treble as needed for the LB stuff....also switching in the guvnor and rubbing the strings over the pickup to emulate dj scratches.....it was a lot of fun!

...as an aside, i never knew "take the power back" was a few cents above standard 440.....it took me a minute to figure out why it was chorusing when i played along!
