Critique this board

Well I'm in the process of upgrading my board and letting a few things go.. this is what I'm shooting for eventually and was just wondering if I could get a 2nd opinion. This is in order from signal to amp by the way

Stompbox tuner (Korg DT-10 etc - no rackmounts)
Boss ODB-3 (doubles as clean boost and signal cut)
Line 6 Echo Park
Reverb (possibly Boss RV5? not sure yet.)
Digitech Jamman

and a compressor but probably a rackmount based on what I'm hearing about pedal comps.

all constructive comments appreciated, thanks

The chain order is probably how I would try it out first time round.

Can't say im the biggest fan of the ODB-3, but if your happy with it, thats cool

What kinda music do you play?

It has a firm grounding in impressionism with hint of post modernism as well as folk art, and I believe that the use of the ODB-3 represents the artist’s angst and stiflement with the modern world.

I know a lot of people aren't into it. I can't say I've had a lot of experience with bass OD/fuzz but I know that at least this one can cut through pretty well. It is noisy though so I'm toying with the idea of replacing it.

I'm a solo player (hence reverb and looper, I also use the OD for "guitar" parts in my loops)

I'm also a rock player in which the OD comes in handy but not much else

also a bit of funk/jazz (toying with the idea of getting a synth/envelope filter but it's really not a priority).

As for the rest, imo a tuner and compressor are suitable for pretty much anything and a delay is what you make of it.

thanks for posting

You should have posted what you did here in your first post.

You will find most pedals that produce a distorted sound to be a little to a lot noisy. The ODB-3 is ok if what you are after is a metal type distortion that works on bass. I had one for a long time and the sound wound up just getting on my nerves after a few years. At the time there wasn't much of a choice, but now there are a lot of good distortion/fuzz/ODs that work on bass that are not a big muff. I'd think if you are using it to add parts and textures to loops then you would want something really versatile [i.e. something with a mid control] as well as a noisy buzz box which still have their place.

The Jamman is a cool pedal.

As for echo/delays I don't like digital, and I don't really like any of Line 6's stuff, if you do really like the sound of it cool, this is your rig.

Reverb; I have never found a reverb pedal that sounded pro to me, and I don't use reverb on bass live, and very rarely in the studio. There are a few new things on the market [I can't place them right now] but overall I like rack reverbs.

I like the planet waves tuner pedal.

I know you are leaning to a rack comp but if you ever get the chance to try a old MXR limiter they are quite nice.

IMO, it's a nice setup for your purposes.
I'd add and envelope filter, but I wear bell bottom pants...

I'd add a 3XFX Fatman, but I wear a codpiece with a sawblade sticking off it...

It's a pretty standard board. It'll be what you make of it and the majority of your sounds will still be coming straight from your hands.

As a solo player myself, I strongly suggest that you get some kind of pitch shifter/harmonizer. They are very useful for lead lines as well as filling out sonic space. Also, you may want to consider a volume pedal or Slow Gear clone for modifying your attack.

the chain is fine but you have about 1/4 the number of pedals that i'd consider acceptable ;]

seriously though why not go for atleast something like a chorus?

I've tried choruses, I don't like them enough to justify dropping $$$ on one.

The pitch shifter or harmonizer sounds like a good idea to me. I was thinking of a whammy but they're too expensive and imo don't really sound that great with bass.

Fallacy.

I got my second whammy IV for $80 used and they sound just dandy on bass. I like running a comp after to clean up some of the digital artifacts when you go +2 octaves, but they track quite well and sound surprisingly good.

I should have specified that I meant specifically the Digitech Whammy (the whammy pedal)

I've tried one with my bass and in my experience, they just don't sound good.

I think we're talking about the same thing. I assume you tried the current model, the Whammy IV. It's red, not quite shiny, has one knob and a stomp.

Also, I understand you didn't like it when you tried it before, but try it again with a compressor after it and you might just fall in love.

Where did you get a Whammy IV for $80?

Don't have a compressor.. on my "to get" list.
