Crunchy, open distortion?

It seems like most bass distortions are too fuzzy for me, I've never quite liked all of the underlying noise, and it seems to get messy too quickly. The only distortions i've really had time to experiment with are the one on my amp, a GK backline 250, which i find to lose too much bottom end and get too fuzzy, a digitech bp50 (copys of a big muff pi, digitech fuzz, ds-1, and guyatone od-1), where they all seem too fizzy other than the guyatone model, a behringer copy of a boss odb-3, way to high endy and peaky for me, and a Randall practice amp.
And I know this sounds weird, but the best distortion I've found is through a Randall 30W combo amp for guitar. I think I'm looking for a more midrangy, cruchy, open distortion with not too much fuzz in the background.
Here is a sound clip of the randall, however the only way I have to record is through a computer mic set next to the combo, so it might not help much:
zSHARE - bass test.wav

anyone have any suggestions for me?
Thanks

You want a muff with a no diode option or a rat with no diodes/LEDs. LEDs in a pedal generally open up the sound (remove compression).

If he has the same "problem" I do, he doesn't want anything resembling a fuzz.

This sounds like it would work (for me), but I didn't try it yet so can't really comment.
Anyone else?

My fav pedal for this is the Fender Sub-Lime Bass Fuzz as it has a crossover freq so you can set where the fuzz "lives" so to speak and use the giant rotary wheel to dial in just a touch or FUZZ MADNESS!

I hear some Muse tunes in there! Awesome sound, by the way.

I get my sound from a guitar amp too, actually. I use a Vox VT20+, usually on Overdrive. Sounds very cool.
