The Cult's Dirty Little Rockstar ...

I'm trying to get a sense of what's being used on this track -- in the middle of the song there's a section that sounds synth-like but could be a pedal .. does anyone who's heard the track recognize the sound?

I assume you are talking about the section that starts at about 1:30. For anyone who hasn't heard the song, here it is.

It certainly sounds like a synth. A quick search for Chris Wyse's gear shows he doesn't have anything on his board capable of that kind of sound. I'm sure you could get close to the tone with a synthy fuzz, but the "sweeps" would be impossible to recreate that way. Running into a manual wah might help a bit, a Morley would be best in that case.

But I suppose a synth pedal is the only way to go. I've played with the Bass Micro Synth and I don't remember anything really close to that sound, but you could probably find something that would work OK. I've never used a Deep Impact, but from the clips I've heard, it might be your best bet. Maybe someone who has/had one can chime in.

Hmm... a Bass Micro Synthesizer could possibly pull that off, with some fuzz dialed in, a fast Rate, and upward sweep settings. But it still sounds like keyboard work to me.

I don't think this sort of tone is within the scope of the Deep Impact, from what I remember when testing one out. I could be wrong, though.
