"Damaged" footswitch - send it back on principle?

Sign in to disble this ad
So I received an EBS Octabass (the new version, with the larger true-bypass footswitch) in the mail yesterday and plan to battle it out against the MXR M288.

I connect it and... no signal at all. I reconnect it... no signal. Then I try the footswitch. I push it harder than usual and suddenly there's a loud pop and finally my signal can be heard. Now the switch works fine.

Was the footswitch perhaps just popped out of some socket? Or could there actually be a shoddy connection in there? Should I send it back on principle?

Incidentally, the EBS vs MXR will be a tough call. The MXR seems to have the more cutting octave sound with more balanced lows, but the EBS's "High" mode is unquestionably the most usable "100% wet" tone.

Send it back. You don't want to go out of warranty and be SOL, my friend.

BTW, some TB switches pop when turned on or off...just the nature of the beast.

Yep. To clarify, this was not that kind of pop. My signal was completely disconnected before I pushed the switch down hard.

Principle, schminciple- send it back because it's bad, unless you bought it as a paperweight.

You know what I'm going to do.. is send them both back, then re-order them when the Octamizer is available on MF. I'll do an A/B/C and finally get the definitive analog octave!

The EBS and MXR both have two usable sounds in my opinion:

MXR= 1) growl voicing & dry blended (the "Sledgehammer" sound), 2) growl & girth & dry voices blended (similar to the EBS mid & dry)

EBS= 1) "High" voicing solo (neato synth sounds), 2) "Mid" voicing & dry blended (similar to the MXR blended signal)

If the Aguilar could possibly get something nearing all three sounds, it could win out.
