I don't have a standalone compressor. Mine is in my amp. It's great to have but I've been pondering compression in my signal path.

An optocomp or the BYOC Armstrong Twin ?

Armstrong Twin

It's going to be going after octave down (eventually) but before my drive/fuzz/octavia (pigtronix disnortion), bassballs, BMS, and polyphase (after I get it fixed)

Green Ringer plus Orange Squeezer...

octave ringmod textures before and after octave, and before summed octave up and down synth voicing, with or without compression...

I guess I'm curious how much 'pulp' that orange is gonna have.

I haven't used the BYOC yet but there are reviews of several other OS clones on my reviews page, plus a section giving my thoughts on OS clones in general.

The Green Ringer is a great sounding effect, but it does lose some low end unless you mod it for bass. I haven't performed those specific mods yet though so I can't give directions.

I wouldn't be surprised if someone on the BYOC forum could advise you about those mods.

As a sidenote - put your compressor after the Bassballs. The high end of the filter sweep is extremely bright, and needs compression to even it out. You may feel like it gives more kick on stage after the compression, but if you put the Bassballs first you'll get a much more audience friendly result that still sounds great.

I was thinking a driven comp would give more kick than a comp'd drive/dist.

Thanks for the tip! I'll probably want the control right before the synth, and to tame that wild sweepy bassballs filter.

I need to check the signal path in my amp, but if my onboard comp is in the pre section then I'll have even more options.

I like to stick to as few messageboards as i can. they're entirely addictive.

Thanks for the reminder, Bongo...I knew you'd pipe up about it.

WELL!

I bought myself a Pigtronix Disnortion for Christmas and it FINALLY arrived today.

Looks like I'll be going for a different comp, as the 'Octava' distortion sounds like a slightly fatter Green Ringer - and it has a 'filter' knob which almost works like a gate - which is awesome for synthy staccato.

I'm thinking BBE Optostomp, BYOC Optocomp, Diamond Compressor, or the Barber TonePress when I really need a comp. Which I don't think I will for awhile. Not so much GAS for a comp. I just want my EP-1 to arrive. Hurry up, mail!
