DBX 160a for bass!!!

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi,

I just managed to get a really great deal on a used DBX 160a compressor Which I have heard is meant to be great on bass!

At the minute I have a DBX 266xl in my rack and it keeps clicking and popping alot when the threshold is higher up with the low notes not getting through well enough...I dont think this works well on bass

Anyway, I need some reviews on the DBX 160a, could anyone tell me if I have made the right choice on getting the 160a for bass. Also how this will better my sound with regards to my old 266lx?

Any advice will be much appreciated!

You made a good choice. Its better to me than the 266. I think the 160a is one of the better compressors for bass. But you will get many different opinions. I am sure you will like it.

I have had one in my rack for years. It enters wonderful studio quality compression, but does not add color to your tone. It is extremely transparent in nature.

So if looking to add grit or color, grab an Empirical Labs or the like.

Check the reviews in my sig. The 160A is a workhorse, the 266 is a crippled donkey.

+1 to bongo. That was exactly my experience. Had the 266 for about a day, sent it back and got the 160 A instead. Lived happily ever after.

160x, 160xt, and the 160a are my favorite compressors that are in the common man's reach. Can't go wrong!

when i was ready and able to upgrade my setup, the best bass teacher i ever had told me to get a stingray, an eden cab/preamp, and a dbx 160a (eden compressor not amazing). about a decade later, im still happy with the dbx. good buy.
