DBX160a or ARt Pro VLA II for Bass?

I keep reading that the ARt Pro VLA II is great for bass, but then I also hear that hard knee compression is better for bass, while the VLA opto compresser is soft knee only.

As a unit to add to my rack to go along with my rackmount bass head, which one would you suggest for bass compression?

Maybe I should make that a DBX 160X versus the ART Pro VLA II.

Does anyone think the 160X is better for a bass rack than the VLA?

The DBX 160 is a great compressor for any application. Its been a standard for years.

To put it in perspective; I've worked in some big studios in my day (inlcuding the Power Station and Media Sound)
They all had at least 1 dbx160; can't remember any of them having ART equipment although it is a decent value

I would rather have the dbx for bass, I have an original Pro VLA but it is in my recording rack.
