DC Humming

Sign in to disble this ad
So I have 3 pedals powered on DC (Boss CEB-3, Boss DD-20, Korg Pitchblack), 2 pedals powered on AC (EBS ValveDrive, Bass Whammy), and an Ernie Ball Volume pedal which doesnt require power.

At first when I heard the hum, I figured it was the pedals because I ran my bass straight to my amp and it was fine. Then I tried just running my bass through the Volume pedal (with Pitchblack in tuner out) and there was a hum. So I figured it must have something to do with the power. Then I just ran my bass through the DD-20 and there was a hum. I then ran it bass > volume (without tuner in tuner out) > whammy > valvedrive > amp, and it was fine. So I figured it must have to do something with the DC power.

I'm powering the DC pedals with a Godlyke Power All. I tried another DC power pack and there's still a hum.

I'm running all 3 power packs (godlyke DC, AC for whammy, AC for valvedrive) from a powerboard then plugged into a single wall outlet.

Are there any other things which may be causing this hum? I'm really stuck

I see that you tried the DD-20 by itself, but have you tried the other DC pedals by themselves, or in various combinations?

summing to bongomania's comment.
If you don't have the problem with the pedals individually, the most likely reason is a ground loop.
But first try them one by one, and combine them. Let us know once you have done that so that is easier for us to help you solve the problem .

Regards

Doug.

I actually had a problem with crackles and hum from our guitarist's amp once... it went on for weeks and we thought his head was going to have to go in for service. Then by accident he plugged it into another wall outlet one night at practice and all the gremlins were gone. Turns out it was a bad wall outlet! Check everything you're plugged into- the wall, a power strip, sometimes those go bad.

I'd say don't be happy so fast... If it just went away, maybe it was something in the outlet or even other kind of interference in your house's power.

My board is quiet most of the time, but sometimes when somebody turns on the shower (electric, of course ) or some other high power consuming thing, a hum starts.
