Dealin with my new XXL pedal.

SO on a whim sorta buy I got a XXL pedal (The one that looks like wrapped steel) and plugged it in, it's fine but I have to throw my amp's db on -15 and keep volume on 9 because if I go any higher there's that mic sorta feedback and I can't figure out how to eliminate it.

Quick suggestions? This thing feeds back like crazy but the first time I found out I seriously lost hearing for a couple minutes. That may come back to bite me in the ass later in life =(

BTW im looking at you Incognito you talked me into getting this

I've had the older, silver XXL for a couple of years now and I haven't encountered what you're describing. I keep my settings at:

Level: 9:30 Tone: 9:30 Warp: Max Gain: Min

I get a unity gain, raunchy grind without excessive noise or low end loss with these settings.

All that I can muster is that maybe you got a defective unit? Maybe shooting Tech 21 an e-mail could shed some light on a fix.

I hope it works out for you because I think the XXL can be a KILLER distortion.......especially when run into a SABDDI.

Good luck.

Im running it through one. Those settings aren't too bad. Still have that mic feedback though. Gonna ask Tech21

What pickups are you using? Maybe they're excessively microphonic? I just got an XXL Bass Edition and don't have that problem.

EMG actives.

A thought occured. Im standing 3 feet from a 700W amp with the pedal between me and the amp itself.

That may be it, I don't know. Im in my tiny little room >.<

Didn't know there was an XXL bass edition, now I feel like a dummy.

It has a better tone control for bass response and it's purple. The tone knob is intended to boost bass frequencies back to the halfway point without cutting treble, but I still lose some bottom with the pedal.

And if you're in close proximity to that kind of power, you can expect microphonic feedback through all kinds of gain pedals. Some pickups are better than others for it, and so are some gain pedals. I get the same thing with certain pedals right up close to my amp. The more distance you can put between yourself and your amp in that situation, the better. It also helps if you're not facing your amp.

Yeah standing 3 feet from your rig with a distortion pedal will get you feeback. I have the silvery one also. I like using the it like this, Volume: 11 Tone: right around 12 Warp: max Distortion: min-max depending on what I am doing, mostly max though. It's a sweet pedal for the used price, the bass one is usually much more pricey used. I think I paid $55 for mine, bass ones seem to go in the $85-$90 range. So for me it was worth the -$30 plus it looks way cooler then the purple one.

According to the user's manual, the tone control on the original XXL works the same way. I'd still like to compare it to the bass-specific model, though.

I doubt there's much difference, the XXL Bass Edition still sounds like a reasonably bass guitar pedal.

I got mine for about the same. It still has the original box and manual, too. My XXL was probably the best deal I ever got on a piece of gear that I actually use.
