Delay help...Malekko 616 -or- Memory Man w/ Hazarai -or- Subdecay Echobox -or- MXR CC

First off, let me start of by saying that I am new to the pedal world. I am trying to piece together a 4-5 pedal board for experimentation. I have little to no clue regarding the differences with most of the stuff I am looking at. I am basing my choices from sound samples and rudimentary research from TB. In regards for what I am looking for....quality is 1st, 2nd is versatilty, and 3rd is cost. FWIW, I am willing to spend no more than $250. You guys are the FX gurus....I could use your help and advice. Here are the pedals I looking at and my thoughts/assumptions from what I have gathered so far;

Malekko 616 - From the sound samples I heard, this seems like a really cool unit. I could see myself using the sounds I heard from the sample posted on the Malekko website. I did read about the 1st gen issues. From what I can gather, the playback still has some dirt to it. While researching the 616, I found out about the Subdecay Echobox.

Subdecay Echobox - From what I could gather from searching TB and from the sound samples I listened to, it seems that the SDEB can do everything the 616 can do but tracks playback with less distortion....is that correct??

EHX Memory Man w/ Hazarai - I dont know too much about this guy, but the added feature of the 30s looper seems cool. If you take the looper out of the equation, how does this guy compare to the 616 or SubD Echobox?

MXR Carbon CopyThis guy seems hit or miss from my research. Maybe some QC issues? I dunno. Also, the sound sample on the MXR website is a guitar track....no bass. The guitar track sounds more like a slappy reverb than a wild crazy delay...that is not what I am looking for. I need more versatility/craziness from a delay. If this pedal is limited, then it's not for me.

Again, please pardon my lack of knowledge regarding these units. Your help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

First off, the 616 and CC are analog and the Memory Man and Echobox are digital, though the Echobox has a fairly analog sound.

The 616 and Echobox also do much more extreme modulation.

In terms of max delay time, the CC and 616 have about 600 ms, I believe the Echobox is 800 ms and the SMMH has a full 3 seconds and can do 30 seconds of loop time.

It comes down to the features you want. The two analog pedals do great self-oscillation if that's something you want, and the Echobox is no slouch itself in this regard.

The EHX is by far the most feature laden. Tap tempo, looping, reverse echo, multitap etc but if you want analog sound, you'd want one of the others.

Between the CC and 616 it's a matter of taste preference.

If you're looking to go analog it may be in your best interest to check out the Memory Boy and Memory Toy.

As for personal preference, the best you can do is listen as much as you can and demo as many as you can. Based on your post, though, it sounds like you've pretty much made up your mind with the Echobox.

or the deluxe memory boy?? best of both worlds - its not out yet but if the memory boy and toy are any indication, it'll be worth the wait:
analog delay with tap tempo and modulation and expression controll AND an effects loop!

For what it is worth, I had a 616 and an Echobox. I kept the Echobox and traded the 616. But I did love the 616 as well.
If I would of had an opportunity to trade the Echobox instead for something I really wanted, I probably would have.
They are both killer in my book!

The 616 doesn't really sound distorted with bass. IMO, you'll be happy with the Echobox as it is a clean delay with some sweet modulation.

+1

I can't wait for this pedal to come out. Since I sold my last pedal delay (over a year ago) I've been thinking about proposing a pedal like this to a custom builder like Mario at Robot Factory. I am stoked beyond belief that EHX are actually building one.

I really hope this does everything it claims it does. It sounds like my whole delay wishlist in one box.
