Delay Questions

I am currently in the market for a delay pedal, and don't know where to start.

I have researched the EHX Memory Boy and think that it probs does everything that I want. However, I have a few questions.

1) What is 'self oscillation'? I have seen alot of this term thrown around on several threads and would very much appreciate somebody clarifying.

2) Is there anything in the Memory Boy's price range that competes with it? Please bare in mind that I am in the UK (I don't know if that would affect prices, etc.) I have heard several good things about the MXR Carbon Copy but wasn't sure if it was worth the extra £50ish. Can it do anything that the MB can't?

3) Is tap tempo a real necessity, or is it just a bonus on pedals like the Deluxe Memory Boy?

For a good display of self oscillation, check this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cia-qoXDZ3c Note that after about 0:35 he isn't even playing the guitar anymore, the signal is self-oscillating while he changes the frequency and repeats.

IMO Tap tempo is a necessity if you play to the band or drummer's tempo and need your delay to match. If everyone plays to you and matches your delay tempo, or a click and you can set your delay correctly beforehand, then its not that big of a deal. For me its a necessity since we don't play to a click and I'm not the bandleader.

Everybody looks to me for tempo, so not sure its needed.

How does the Memory Boy compare to the Carbon Copy?
