the delay self-oscillation thread - with clips!

Sign in to disble this ad
inspired by the other thread I just answered, I thought:

letīs make a thread specialized on delay self-oscillation with clips!
tape, bucket brigade & digital is all good!

Iīm first with the moog mf-104z and the boss dd-20.

hopefully all you owners of malekko, empress, mxr, roland, watkins, hiwatt, maxon, fulltone and whatnot-delays contribute!

-------

http://www.soundclick.com/dubsymmetry

I play a few notes, then manipulate the delay time and feedback (knobs, didnīt have my expr. pedals handy), so you get a good comparison of how the oscillation on both units sounds.

note: I went directly from my passive 4string (BEAD) bass -> delays -> rme fireface400, no eq or other post production, but I have made quick gain changes when the feedback got out of hand and was about to clip the converter.
when I recorded the moog, the dd-20 wasnīt in the chain and vice versa.

clean: bass -> rme fireface

moog:

there are a few clicks in the first example - this is when I switched from long to short (or the other way round). sometimes it clicks, sometimes not - I suspect when a note is played back and I hit the switch it clicks, in between notes it doesnīt. It is also noteworthy, that the switch changes the time excactly in half or double.
when you hear the oscillation stop suddenly, itīs when I hit the bypass switch.

dd-20:

I changed the delay modes: "standard", "analog", "tape", "warp", "dual", "reverse" (in this order, but there might be duplicates)

I have to say that they compliment each other nicely, I use the dd-20 for the glitchy, digital stuff and tapp delay. the moog I use for the nice analog stuff. ; )

i'll bite

heres a few clips from the line6 dl4's different oscillation options

http://www.soundclick.com/lotsolowend

in order of appearance:
1. Multi-Head delay
2. Sweep Echo
3. Digital Delay
4. Lo-res Delay
5. Reverse
6. Tape Echo

i'm going to give you a fair warning though, the volume changes pretty dramatically at times - its tough to get a level volume on a 1 shot recording but its not too bad live

all delays were done with feedback maxxed and i was changing the settings of "tweak" "tweez" and delay time

my favorite and most used is the multi-head (if you get it just right you can even imitate the beginning of pistola by incubus) but i think the reverse comes in a close second for me and i didnt know i could do that til i recorded it :P

hope this helps,
-jonathan

Most of these "songs" contain a lot of self-oscillation.

Pigtronix Echolution

Here's a couple of videos of the Pigtronix Echolution Phi Delay Pedal. It's just a bunch of noise-making to give people an idea of the less "normal" things that the pedal will do. The audio is just straight into the computer - I'm not using the camcorder audio.

I try not to delay self oscillation. Sometimes you just have to do it right then and there, you know? Fortunately, the internet makes it easy to find good pics for it.

Most of those are with a Malekko 600 Dark, although I think the first few are with a Malekko 300 Dark (waiting for the 600 to arrive ).

Thanks, lotsolowend.
I'd been having difficulty finding a really good consistent self-oscillation on the DL4.
Their "analog" model settingss were lacking (I'd worked a long time back with a guitarist who used a DoD 680, and that thing was a self-oscillation MONSTER).
The multi-head setting is one I hadn't gotten to try. I heard it on your sample and tried it, and it's just the ticket for now.
The spaceships are taking off...

All very cool guys but none of that really compares to a real Multi-Head tape echo, sorry.

And no onbox reverb compares to playing in an old studio echo chamber.
And no sampler sounds precisely like the sounds it's sampling.
And no digital recording sounds precisely like an analog recording, or precisely like the original sound.

Film at 11.

no problemo, i discovered that one on accident and its definitely one of my favorites. i spent an hour or two after i got my dl4 sitting on the ground with it and just tapping the end of my cable to see what kind of wicked sounds i could pull out, no guitar necessary!

the carbon copy does some neat stuff if i remember right, someone definitely needs to put that up here - some actual analog delay

A digital that does compare to a tape echo is the Boss RE-20. I will post sound samples soon.

i'd love to hear an echoplex with bass. i've got a vintage space echo and it's cool, but i'd LOVE to hear those echoplex clips.

I have no clips of the echoplex that I am aware of, I sold it over ten years ago for way too little money

But there is a reason I still have the space echo and not the echoplex, the Roland sounded better even with a 20 year old tape in it than the echoplex with a new tape.

I'll see about making a self-oscillation clip of the space echo though sometime this week.
