delay. why so exspensive??

Sign in to disble this ad
I love the delay sound and would really love to buy a pedal but the prices are just so damn high fir one pedal, even used the best deal on local classifieds is 80$ for a used beat up DOD. Since our dollar is so low at the moment it makes ebay virtually useless fr these kind of purchases and even then I'd expect that you could get a used delay for 40$ but they are all 50-60, which isn't bad but considering you can get a decent distortion used for cheaper and hell i got a used morley power wah for 20$.

Can anybody answer my question on why delays sell for upwards of 100$ and seem to be more expensive then most other single effects?

40 you say? buy a Ibanez DE-7, it's a great digital delay, analog delay's cost more money. i'm not a builder but i think the delay chips might be quite pricey.

classic analog delay generally makes use of "bucket brigade" chips, which at one point were thought to be exhausted until some copies emerged, but are still not cheap. Longer analog delays require more of these expensive components, and you end up with REALLY pricey analog delays like the Moogerfooger (which at least offers precisely calibrated settings for "stun" and "kill")

Also, open up a delay pedal some time...they're not exactly the easiest things to build/create...

Delay is the Mercedes of the effect world .

That would make fuzz the Lexus...a really dirty, unwashed Lexus...

I use delay all the time in a band context, but I've never forced it. Either an effect works with the music you make or it doesn't.

As for why delays are expensive, it's because (as rratajski pointed out) they are harder to make than most other pedal types.

So where are you that the dollar is so bad at the moment?
Australia? New Zealand like me?

There are cheap delays out there - the Danelectro fab echo is only about $15 US, although it's not the most versatile, has plastic housing etc. You can mod it though so that it self-oscilates and has adjustable delay time IIRC.

It always takes time, but if you are in Australia/NZ, deals do come up from time to time. I got an Ibanez AD99 delay lovely analog delay, although I'd be happier if it could self-oscilate so I could at least experiment with that) from Cash Converters for NZ$50. They had no idea what it was and didn't have a power supply to test it out with...

The other thing to try is to buy from forumites here. There are often great deals to be had on the forums. Yes, it's a bit of a risk, but people sell Digitech digidelay/Ibanez DE7 for about $50 US often. Many of them will ship international if you ask nicely and offer to pay shipping costs (which if they use USPS are usually much cheaper than what most people on ebay will charge for using UPS/Fedex).

Sweeeeeet. Fixed. Thanks!

So IMO, spending the money on a delay that you want (I.E. - that you'll keep for a long time...not a month...AKA sugar in your GAStank) is WORTH it. For those of your in far away lands where effects are hard to come by, getting a modeler like a Line 6 DL4 or a Tonecore may be worth the money since you get a lot of bang for your buck rather than getting just one pedal and then having to get another pedal to accentuate it or create a different delay...

I think it is a very cool comparison you made.

Also, I really love delay...

Once again the mentioning of pedal prices is depressing for me.

I bought a new Ibanez DE-7 for 86 € and a used DE-7 for 50 €.
But the pedal that costed me the most was the Line6 DL-4, 344 €.

Oh yeah, did I mention I have a serious addiction for delays?

Like RCCollins told me (in the oh so colorful way does): I could have spent that money on a 'decent' amp.

To KingCrimson,
Can you get Behringer where you live?
I like their Vintage Delay (BOSS DM-2 copy I think). I have no experience with their other delays.
That's a good way to get you started. Just my suggestion.

About building your delays or the shipping to the other side of the world?

Delays are some of the more complex circuits...

Look at the schematic for some fuzzes and then look at a delay schematic. The number of components in a delay is wayyyy more than a fuzz.

The fact that the OP thinks that $50 is too much for a delay means there are people in the world even the mighty Malekko can't possibly market to.

Ok thanks for the advice, to the alst poster i don't think 50$ is too much for a delay, i think 100$ is too much for the cheapest available delay here (EHX). I found it funny how i'd have to spend a fortune on this kind of effect, even used.

50$ delay I'd be on very quick, even used, but they don't have any here like that.

I heard about the Dano except i don't know how to mod pedals, any site to learn?

It shouldn't be too pricey to NZ. I just got a package from the states to Aus today that was $37 USD to ship. It included an effect pedal, 12 Tubes and 2x SVT CL handles + feet, bolts etc... I think it was a 7lb package.

Thirty five dollars? Bubble wrap that thing next time and slide it into a Priority Mail flat rate envelope. I've shipped pedals all over the world for twelve bucks, many times over.
