Delays

Ok I have G.A.S. again and I'm looking at delay pedals....I don't want to spend a fortune as i'm only going to be using this pedal for one song in our set (well that and a litle experimentation)

Modtone MT-AD
MXR M169 Carbon Copy
EHX Memory Toy/Boy
Digitech DigiDelay
Delta Lab DD1

Each seems to have their positives and negatives

The Modtone only goes up to 350ms, but is an analog digital Hybrid

The MXR is the most expensive of the bunch but has up to 600ms of delay

The memory toy goes up to 550ms and is priced really well, but it seems a lot of people are reporting QC problems with the first batch

the Memory Boy also does 550ms and is also priced right and i like the idea of added vibrato and being able to control this with an expression pedal

Digitech....well it is digital, but has a buttload of features including ping-pong, tape, reverse, modulated, and looping...i'm a big fan if tape type echo's but i have yet to hear this pedal and i find digital pedals to sound a bit cold...though i have their XBC Bass Multi Chorus Pedal and though it sounds a bit icy to me it gets the job done fairly well

Delta Lab DD1....found a few guys that use it and they report that it seems to be well built and it gets the job done but again only 350ms of delay but it is also the least expensive of the bunch

i think that a blend is a must for me and my ears seem to prefer triangle wave modulation when compaed to square wave...(really looking hard at the Memory Boy because of this feature)

i think based on what you get for the money that the Memory Boy and or Toy are currently leading the pack....but the QC thing has me currently pausing to pull the trigger

what would you guys buy? (pretend your me...lol)

I had only Memory Boy and it's a very nice unit and also it's well priced. It's darker sounding delay if it matters. I you want to experiment a little bit then modulation would be really useful.

BTW, after spending some time with a Boy, I really want an older Man.

Depends what music you're playing and what you want to use it for inside the songs. You might not need a 600ms delay or all the bells and whistles offered by some units. I'm not much of a delay guy, but I do like to add the effect in selected sections (intro, some transitions, bridges, etc..) if it fits of course. So I decided I didn't need a fancy unit although I am a Boss and MXR fan.

I went for the Memory Toy for a few reasons: the store I bought it from has a very goog customer service policy; I didn't need something that could play a CD, make coffee and start my car all while allowing me to play through it; I didn't want to pay 200 $ CAN; I didn't have much space left on the pedalboard (and don't want to go for a bigger one because of my current addiction issues....).

I had tried it previously and had checked out a link on one of the threads here, so I had an idea of what it could.

Hope it helps !

I firstly bought the carbon copy,... thought it was the best thing ever when I first heard it,... didn't use the modulation on it tho... however since found that in a band setting it is a bit too dark for me, tends to sound muddy IMHO... thought it was cool having the feedback craziness on it but never used it successfully as it can get loud quite quickly...

since settled on the hardwire DL8,... not sure what its price is for you but for me it was similar to the carbon copy,... has numerous clear sounding modes with some short delay and some aded features (tape, reverse, modulated etc) and has quite a good looper in it... very easy to learn too... and if you hate cold delays the modulate and tape settings on this are quite warm... its my pedal I would buy if I was pretending to be you
added things I like is it has 'heavyish' knobs that don't freely rotate so you lose settings, plus it has a knob lock guard that you can put on top of it so you don't lose your settings...

definitely try it!

EHX Memory Boy
Just awesome... especially for it's price.

Or BOSS DD-3 if you prefer digital. I love my DD-3, but lately I'm favouring analog delay.

Wow, just posted this in another thread:

I got a Digitech Digidelay and I would have to say for the $50 I paid for it used, it is pretty awesome. It has a nice Tape simulation mode, a Modulated mode that adds chorus to the delays, and up to 4 seconds of ping-ponging Digital Delay. Oh, and a reverse and a looping function too. It's only $99.95 new. It's a pretty damn good deal. It also does cabinet modeling but I cannot speak to that feature. I've mainly used the Tape and Mod modes, both are really cool. The reverse is sorta interesting, but not all that functional I don't think. Looping I have not mucked with. Apparently you can also use tap tempo with the delay too but that I also have not messed with.

It is compared to the Memory Boy which sounds awesome and doesn't need to be sent back for repairs.

not really, but it is more than i wanted to spend on this particular effect...

i have tried tons of boutique pedals that i absolutely love....but as a working musician i need gear that is easily replaceable should something break down....translated that means stuff that just about every store will carry that i can replace at a moments notice...

that said i own a dark boost that has become an integral part of my dirty sound, and i was feaking out when Devi quit making them...as luck would have fuzzhugger started building them again...so you can bet there is another one on the way...i don't care to go through that again...lol

based on my wants and needs i think the Memory Boy is in the top spot at the moment I'm headed out on monday (closed on Sunday) to my mom and pop to give it a try

I would just say to try out the DigiDelay, I really dig the Tape and Mod settings on there, and 4 seconds of digital delay plus the other settings it has are nothing to sneeze at...
