Delays and loopers

Sign in to disble this ad
Brief;
-I'm wanting to start a noise/experimental/ambient project.
-My setup will likely include; ZVex WM, CB SerranoP, DHA STDB VT-1, SD Valcoder, SD Noisebox, EHX Clone Theory, HBE Psilocybe and a Keeley looper.
-Playing a passive Fender Jazz into a LMII
-May play the occasional G****r through the rig (Leavng the setup the same, except switching the WM out for a FF)
-Money is not limited, but not wanting to shell out huge amounts of ££££
-Delay will be for both self oscillation and general delay
-Don't want to incorperate an expression pedal.
-UK

Senario;
I've been wanting a delay pedal for quiet a while now, and will be my next purchase. This is due to the fact they are the most fun and hardest to work efficiently with. However, now that i've decided that i will be doing a experiemntal project, i'm stuck on what i want and i need some direction with where im going as i'm confused on how to do this. You'll see.

I want a delay pedal that will self oscillate nicely to fit in with the ambient side and would also like tap tempo, for just your standard delay. This is due to ease of setup and no tweaking required. However this is not essential. Also i would like a feature like that allows the effect to self oscillate at the touch of a switch, like the RE-20, just for ease. Again, not essential. I've been looking into both digital and analogue, ranging from the DD series, RE-20, Carbon copy, Echo Box to the Echo 600 dark. Not too bothered if the unit includes modulation, as i'll have a couple mod units anyway.

However, i will also need a looper to do some over dubbing with. So i've been looking at things such as the RC-2, EHX SMMH and DD-20 and several of these do both, looping and delay. However, it seems i wouldn't get the self oscillation with these, or as easily as i could.

So my question to you all is, how would you go about achieving this? Would you buy a specific delay, and a specific looper, spending twice as much and loosing twice as much floor space? If any of you guys have ambient boards, please share as delays and loopers are probably the most essential pieces of kit on a ambient board. Trying to keep this setup on a PT.Jr Yes i do think it's possible too! maybe ill have to kick the DHA STDBass VT-1 to the streets though.

sorry for the long post
Thanks all,
Dan

The Empress Superdelay can do everything that you're asking.

When you say "looper" do you mean to play along with yourself, or just add in some ambience that you can play over? If it's the latter, you might check out the Digitech PDS 20/20. It's a great modulated delay, and you can tweak the internal trimpots to make it self-oscilate, and it has a second footswitch for infinite hold, so you can build up some textures, hold it, and then play over it. No tap tempo, though. And it doesn't work the way a standard looper would where you step to begin loop, and step to end it. The PDS 1002 is pretty much the same thing without the modulation, and it's cheaper. Just a thought about the PDS pedz.

Another possibility would be the combo of DD-7 (looper, tap tempo, etc), and a small analog unit (or Guyatone MD-3) for the self-osc? I only suggest the DD-7 because it's small, but any full featured digital delay/looper that you have room for would do.

I am not as space limited as you, so it may not be relevant, but what I do is run a PDS 20/20 into a Digitech Jamman for my experimental/noise style. I'm actually also looking for an Echo Park to add, because I find myself in need of tap tempo when I play with a drummer. I think I can fit it.

It seems the empress superdelay can't loop and act as a delay at the same time? Can anyone comfirm this? Seems like a waste to me as this unit can do all that i want, but not simultaneously.

I mean something i had previously recorded so i can play along too it. However the more i think about it, i wonder why i couldn't do the latter as it would seem more fitting.

This seems like the thing too do, but i fear i would end up using the DD as a delay instead of a looper and i would end up with digital, analogue and having to purchase another looper

Interesting! I may look into something like this.

Anymore thoughts?

There isn't a pedal out there, that I know of, that can do both. You need two separate pedals. I personally have the Empress for the delays and will be getting a second pedal, probably a boomerang, for the looping.

The Stereo Memory Man with Hazarai can loop and delay at the same time. I got mine last week from this UK store for £119 inc delivery:

It's very good for ambient stuff - overdub loops, reverse them, speed them up or slow them down, filter them, etc. It can kinda self ocillate too in the 300ms+Mod mode, which gives chorus/flanger type sounds, turning up the feedback provides the craziness.

+1. The Hazarai very much sounds like what you're looking for. However, keep in mind that the looper only has 30 seconds in it, so if you need more than that you may want to look into a separate delay and looper.
