Demo Vids: Musicomlab EFX MKII Pedalboard/MIDI Controller And Preset Saver

Sign in to disble this ad
Lame title, eh? Best I could think of.

This thing has completely changed how my pedalboard is set up. It has eight loops that you can save into up to 100 presets in any combination of each other (the loops stay serial though) as well as functioning as a MIDI controller. It also lets you save patches on your MIDI controllable pedals (like the Modfactor and Pitchfactor) onto presets with the other loops. Here are the vids:

Super cool system. I don't have much use for it at present or likely in the next five years, but I'll keep my eye on it should I ever go MIDI.

I've kind of been thinking about a switching system at some point in the future, and the MIDI functionality is very appealing- it could potentially take the place of my giant behringer fcb1010 (ableton), and being able to use an external exp pedal sending midi CC's would be a plus as the fcb1010's exp pedals are pretty much crap. Ive reached critical mass with all the boards and switches I have in front of me and have to bounce around on, but my skills haven't yet caught up to my ideas and plans, so my gear isn't limiting me at the moment- but I can ultimately see the limitations ahead and something like the musicomlab switchers could potentially streamline my rig and routine in more ways than one...

..but it's quite expensive, and I also wonder if the MIDI would really be useful to me- Using it extensively for effects switching and midi sends (controlling ableton) could create too much overlap, and if Im not going to use the midi, I might as well look at cheaper options. Either way, it's a cool unit and would be great for click/pop-free, efficient and dynamic effects switching...

..and I'm thinking out loud and rambling, so thanks for sharing- great demo, very informative! You've got a nice rig, I can tell you've put a lot of time into it

Thanks, guys- hopefully it gives a hint at how useful it is. I forgot to mention that there's a mute switch as well. They're much more popular over at TheGearPage, and you can find them used there now and then in the Classifieds.

I should add that one helpful option is that if I'm playing on a certain patch (say a fuzz patch) and I want to add on another effect loop (say an overdrive) when playing live but I don't want to save it, I can hit Mode, add it for a moment and then just click on Don't Save to get back to the main bank menu without having to permanently save it.

Question, could in/out A be for in front of the amp and the in/out B be set up to for the effects loop on the amp? If yes then this could be a usefull unit.

Apparently, section A (loops 1-4) and section B (loops 5-8) can be run independently of one another- they each have their own in and out. I haven't tried running the second half in my effects loop, but I imagine it would work fine. Maybe check over with some owners at TheGearPage or the guys at RockBox (the place I bought it from) to be sure.

Any idea if there's a significant difference between the MKI & MKII?

I know the MKI doesn't have a mute switch and the display is in a different location. I'm not positive how different they are after that- I know the MKI had more presets available (128), but I believe it did not have the option of using loops 7 and 8 as control functions.

hmmm... it's late and the wife is sleeping, so i can't watch more of the video, but is there a mode where each of the 8 pedals can just act to turn on and off each of the 8 loops? that would be amazing... like a 'patch' mode and a 'looper' mode.

i really need to check this out, though... amazing idea to put it all in one box on the floor!

Hi John,
Yes, it pretty much does that. If you hit MODE once so you go into the preset editing mode, then the bottom 4 switches turn on and off each individual loop on loops 1-4. Hit MODE again to go through 5-8 and it does the same- you can hit MODE any time to toggle back and forth between 1-4 and 5-8. Once you're done playing in that way, you just hit the DOWN button (which also functions as the DON'T SAVE button) and it will go back into regular preset mode. So it does what you want, except you have to hit MODE to get to the second four loops instead of using the top four switches (the eight switches are the only controls the unit has).

Though decidedly guitar-biased, I'll just leave this here, as it's a sweet setup and demonstration of the system.
