Thumbs up Devi Ever Electric Brown (Review and Clips)

Sign in to disble this ad
After many many months of trying to find clips of this pedal with no luck, I decided to just buy it and do them myself. I'm glad I did. The Electric Brown is a nice pedal with a pretty cheap price tag - $95.

Electric Brown

The Electric Brown is extremely well built. I like to use Grygrx "shake test" when I get a new pedal. This thing passed with flying colors. I haven't opened her up yet to check out the insides. I suspect it's very similar to Grygrx's gut shots of the Year of the Rat at www.bassfuzz.com.

The picture below is from Devi's website. My pedal has the same graphics but with white knobs. I think I like the black knobs better, but oh well.

The pedal is just like the other $95 pedals from Devi Ever - two knobs "Volume" and "Control." Devi's website says there is "lots of gain on tap" with the volume knob. This is definitely true. I had to keep the volume fairly low for the clips to avoid clipping. The "Control" knob controls the intensity and character of the overdrive. The pedal can get pretty nasty with the "Control" knob cranked.

The pedal is sensitive to your playing style. The softer you play, the lighter the drive; the harder you play, the heavier the drive. I try to show you this in the clips. For each one (except the clean clip), I play the riff three times. The first is with a very light touch on the strings. The second is with a heavier touch and represents my usual playing style. The third is really digging in.

I had one problem with the pedal. If I turn the "Control" knob all the way down or all the way up, I pick up radio stations. I'm not sure why this is the case.

I would say the pedal does a good job of delivering slight overdrive to almost full on distortion. I haven't tried it yet with my band. My only experience is plugging it directly into the computer. I will update this when I get the chance to use it with my rig. I really like this pedal, and you can't beat the $95 price tag.

I used my passive Jazz bass for the clips. I left the "Volume" knob in the same position for all the clips - approximately 9 o'clock. The clips are named after the "Control" setting. So, "Control at 3" means the control knob is set at 3 o'clock. Duh!!

Let me know if you have any trouble with the clips, or have any questions. Enjoy.

Sweet, thanks for doing these. I like it more on the lower settings, adding just a bit of hair around the edges. I swear, before all's said and done, I'm gonna try every damn pedal she makes

No problem. Let me know if there's any particular setting you want me to do. I'm pretty sure I'll try all her pedals too. I think my next purchase will be the Dark Boost.

I tried out a Vintage Fuzz Master and a Hyperion last week, and I'm in the process of trading them for a Cherry Pop and a Never Drive

Thanks. The 12 o'clock setting sounds very workable.

Hmm. Were you increasingly playing harder each time through?

hmm that sounds pretty good to this cowboy. Probably too much gain to use with a tube amp though.

Note, I would bet it DOESN'T look like the year of the rat photos I took. The YOTR I have is an early model before redesign. Those pedals are a ton cleaner now.

Hi Valerus. Yes. I played each clip three times at the settings. The first time through I played very lightly on the strings. The second time through was my normal playing style. The last time was really digging in. I was trying to show how the pedal reacts with how hard/soft you play.

Gut shot added to my original post.

That's what I thought

Picked up radios? That's more the reason for me to buy this!

I'm totally itching for a Dark Boost too, and I'm not entirely sure why

The Electric Brown clips sound great! Really love it at the lower gain settings - sounds quite a bit like the Polish Love at really low gain. Just a hint of grit and overdrive to colour the notes. Lovely stuff!

+1 to the PL statement. I think the PL has more grit though. I could barely hear his grit, which isn't bad though.

Great clips! Too subtle for my tastes. I'm definitely surprised as most Devi Ever pedals seem to be over the top.

Id say use it for some sort of psychadelia/progressive show?

or just a spinal tap tribute band?

I like the Spinal Tap idea. The set list so far would include:

1. Give Me Some Money
2. Listen (To What the Flower People Say)
3. Big Bottom and of course
4. Stone Henge.
