devi ever hyperion

i pulled the trigger, couldent help myself.

after spending hours of research about what was "the one" fuzz pedal for me, i was set on a devi cherry pop. wasent able to find one for sale anywhere, stores were out of stock. saw a hyperion on ebay for $95 and just went for it.

will post full review with soundclips after i get it.. my only worry is, my main basses are active. i wonder how much theyll get along..

even though i already have two fuzzes, after listening to tons of 60s underground psychedelic stuff, and hearing my guitar player describe one particular bass fuzz tone as "like a boulder rolling down a mountain" i decided it was time to achieve a sound that would be described like that.. hopefully this will be the one, it seems pretty agressive..

should arrive friday. stay tuned..

Cool! That's the one she markets as her "Muff killer", correct?

Hope you like it.

I had a Hyperion for a while, and got a pretty good feel for it. I played active only and it was fine, so fear not.

As for the tone: with the control knob most of the way down, that is where you get the muff tones. I would say it was slightly more defined, but still muff-ish. As you turn the control knob up, it gets more defined, then above noon, you start getting some scrambled tone. Near the upper end of the control knob, it gets more scrambled, and you can squeeze some subtle octavia out of it.

yes.

i had a feeling it would be fine with actives. it seems muffish but not as mid-scooped from what i heard? but thats just the terrible 1 minute clip on the devi site.

very cool that you say theres some subtle octavia... totally what i'm into.

i'm also going to borrow a buddys big muff to a/b when i get it, just for comparison.

the only thing i know i dont like about it is.. it doesent have a funny name.. like soda meiser, or cherry pop.. oh well, ill learn to love it anyway i'm sure..

the pedal arrived today, and i had a chance to rehearse with it.

my first impression, at bedroom-volume, was that there was some low end loss. then i went to a rehearsal and brought it, and after setting the volume where it needs to be id say it keeps the same amount of lows, no loss or added bottom. its definately an agressive fuzz, has a little bit of hum if its on and your not playing. seems very well built..

it is active friendly, however, i noticed that the "control" knob behaves differntly with active vs passive instruments. not good or bad, just definately a differnce related to the active electronics.

i have a gig tomarrow night and saturday, both will get recorded. might be able to post live in-the-mix soundclips, and sooner or later will record soundclips of just the bass.

the only thing i definately do not like about its sound is how muddy and nasty the band sounds as a whole, if i use this fuzz while the guitarist has a high-gain setting on, and is playing rhythm/chordal stuff. if hes soloing / on a cleaner setting, this thing sounds huge. but i suppose that goes for most fuzzes, you need to learn when its appropriate.

be very interesting to hear the live mixes!

and yes for most of devi's pedals they don't do subtle so much,...

very interested to see what happens when my cherry pop comes in tho

recorded gig two days after i got the pedal..

the only place i know for sure where theres tons of fuzz is track 3 (infectious, raining, ext.) about a minute and 20 seconds in

thats a pretty fair representation of what this fuzz sounds like with the band.

still intend to do just bass soundclips..just dont have the time

haha, if your ever in new york check our myspace for show dates.. ( www.myspace.com/theredlightsrock )

ive been really enjoying the hyperion... i kinda wish it had a gain knob, but its totally fine without it..

my next thing is to test it with a dying battery, someone posted on here that itll react nicely to that, it sparked my interest..

Whoa, the Hyperion sounds fantastic there. Great usage. Are you using a whammy for those high screams during that part?

yeah, i actually got the whammy right before we left for the gig- had no time to toy with it litterally untill soundcheck. the high end is really hurting at that show, but now when i do those guitar-ish solos i put my messdrive after it, and it sounds great, because the messdrive has 1. massive headroom 2. very little highs

but anyway, yeah, i think the hyperion is a keeper

I've been GAS'ing for a Hyperion for a while now but everyone over here seems to have sold out. I'm guessing they're pretty popular. Is it the same in the US?

Analogue Haven usually tends to get first dibs on Devi's stuff, and the Hyperion is listed in stock there. Not sure what shipping would be, but that's always a good place to start:
