Devi Ever Never Drive

Not sure if everyone is going to be interested in this one at all, but someone requested clips. I posted these in another thread (which is now closed), but they got buried, so I figured I'd just make another thread.

First of all, a warning: this pedal is not for everyone (or even most bassists), but it is my new favorite distortion pedal. I readily admit that it does lose low-end, but it has such rich harmonics that I still love it. At all settings, it is an extremely over-the-top saturated, angry distortion that basically takes your tone and puts it through a woodchipper.

My Never Drive looks just like the one above, except I have a "texture" knob instead of "control". The texture knob is not exactly a tone control, although the tone does get a bit more shrill and icepick-y as you go clockwise. But there is not a lot a variation in the tone; its kinda a one-trick-pony. Then again, most of my favorite pedals ARE one-trick-ponies. I play a few riffs so you can hear it on all strings.

First a clean reference, one measure of each riff I play

Now with the Never Drive, with texture at 9:00

texture at noon

texture at 4:00

dude... your clean reference tone is even dirtier than I use 99% of the time. heh.

Feel free to take that as a compliment.

Hrmmm, I just listened to it again, and you're right, the clean clip did have a little sizzle to it. I'm pretty sure that's due to the recording. I know that my mixer wasn't clipping, so it must have been the sound card on my computer that was being overdriven. The output of my amp is pretty clean

I really like the tone at 9:00. As it goes up, it's a bit too messy for me, but it sounds kinda like a Big Muff with way more balls.

I'll never be able to drive, so maybe I should get one just to write "I can" above the label's writing

Yes I have. It is extremely heavy. I find that the Dark Boost can do amazing things as far as putting major thump into pretty much any pedal. As a matter of fact, if you go to Devi's Dark Boost page, you'll find a clip I did of Never Drive -> Dark Boost.

Once again, thanks for posting these.

I'm still lusting after one, the real internal battle is whether to spring for one of these or save up and grab me a Tentacle Fuzz....

No problem. Like I said before, I love demoing pedals.

I would say that between this and the Tentacle Fuzz just comes down to whether your preference is for "fuzz" or "distortion", which is admittedly gray. I would definitely say that this pedal is on the distortion side of that wall, unlike most of the other Devi pedals, which are decidedly fuzz.
