devi ever ruiner, gated?

Sign in to disble this ad
ok so im heard on some utube videos that this is a gated fuzz but devi's website doesnt say it is...just a bass fuzz. i see the list of gated fuzzes and ya, this one isnt listed.

i was really hoping to get her supermassive black hole but hell, its not for sale...is the ruiner a clone of it? i was hoping to get a muff sound and hoping for it to be versatile enough to have a decent buzzing sawblade fuzz and a synthy sorta buzz to be dialed in too if i needed.

dont wanna spend the money for a wolly mammoth , brown dog, etc. $100 sounds good right now.

For 90 (less used) it's the best money you'll spend on a pedal! Devi's bass part on the ric is a true testament to this pedal. Over the top killer fuzz and gain.

The Ruiner is gated.
It is also an excellent cheap substitute for a woolly mammoth. Although it is sensitive to the output of your bass, the Ruiner is more forgiving to high output than the mammoth.

...and somewhere I read it can be split into two Dark Boost very easily. It's a classic fuzz pedal very sensitive to everything G.Bisson mentioned and also to where it resides in your pedal chain. it took me forever to find the place on the board where it was right for me, but it's a keeper.

Ruiner in an Xotic blender is one effect I'll never leave home without. Forget some so-called "synth" pedal with it's envelope, this is the moog-like Buzz we want. It seems to be gated and it seems to be almost portamento, but I don't think it is. Two Dark Boosts make a Ruiner. Dark Boost isn't gated either.

I own both the Ruiner and the SMBH pedals and can say for sure that they are very different. Personally I prefer the SMBH. I bought the Ruiner in an effort to have a similar sounding fuzz that I could adjust the level of gain on. The SMBH only has controls for volume and tone and when turned on the amount of gain is way over the top for most applications. I was hoping the Ruiner would be more controllable but it really isn't. The gain control on the Ruiner does not have a very big range and does not back off all that much when backed off all the way. As far as low end is concerned the Ruiner does not lose any but I did experience some tracking issues on lower notes compared with the SMBH. If anything it sounds as though the SMBH might even boost the lows a little. I could go on but I think the best thing to do for you would be to post sound samples of both as these are just my opinions of these pedals and the best way for you to decide is to hear them for yourself. Will make and post some in the next day or so.

I own a Woolly Mammoth and it is a great pedal.
I owned a Ruiner for a few weeks and hated everything about this pedal. It just did not sound good. I can't say if it was gated but it does not really matter. As bass players what we are after is TONE.

If I may recommend, the Zvex Mastotron is a better alternative to the Woolly Mammoth than the Ruiner. Does it exactly match the WM, no. Does it sound good on bass. Yes, absolutely. It actually sound different not better or worse.
To my ears, the WM is more organic sounding and the Mastotron is a bit more synthy.
All this said in a live setting I'm not sure anybody in the audience could tell the difference.

The Mastotron is a very versatile effecgt and great bang for the buck. It might be more versatile than the WM, which is a bit of a one try poney. But what a MASTER TRICK.

No disrespect to Ms. Ever but her pedal did not move me.
