Question Which DI?

Sign in to disble this ad
I need a DI. Have around $200 to spend. My only rig right now is a 100W combo amp, and that leaves much to be desired. Do you think the amp emulation qualities of the Sansamp BDDI will be helpful here.

That said, which one would you buy?

1) Aguilar Tone Hammer
2) Sansamp BDDI
3) Sansamp Para DDI
4) Countryman Type 85
5) Radial JDI
6) Other?

SansAmp Para DDI, but, if tone shaping is your business then you may want to go with BDDI

my two cents

I forgot to mention: I'm not considering the M80 because I don't need/use distortion. Isn't distortion a big part of what the MXR M80 is?

How about you trade in for a better amp that gas a DI output?

my 2c here: maybe he may want to have a simple DI in order to enter his bass directly into a PA sometimes...way more comfortable than bring the whole amp

the m80 is great even if you don't use the distortion option.
the tone shaping available on this unit is great.

again, +1 for the Para Driver considerin' that it seems that you do not aim for distortion and tone shapin' (but Para Driver can even do that stuff if u want..)

So would you say the Para DI is better than Aguilar Tone Hammer?

I have the PBDDI, the 3 Channel SansAmp. It is nice to have 3 distinct tones at my disposal without having to reach down and adjust knobs. It works great as a DI, and great as a tone shaping pedal direct into the amp.

JDI, every day of the week UNLESS you need all those extra amp circuits on the sansamps/mxrs etc.

I'll chime in for the Tone Hammer here. I've used and loved many Sansamp products in the past but the TH has displaced them for the time being. Nice warm tube grit, great EQ section.

Switching out DI boxes has become a bit of an unintended hobby for me. All of the ones you listed do what you want, and they all do it well. I would say it's more of a flavor issue than a function issue at this level.

I agree. I'm thinking the Para DI would be a better fit.

What bass do you play?
Where are you playing? Clubs, church? What's the PA like?
Do you NEED tone shaping or just a good DI to get your signal to the PA?

Without knowing more I have to say a Radial JDI.

DI..

I've recently been turned onto the Rolls PM351..

Basically it's a combination hard wired monitor (headphones etc) with DI for both a 1/4 high impedence and an XLR..

Brings up the opportunity to use headphone monitor if playing a brick room etc.

Costs about $80 on ebay.

Tim
