I'm looking for a good DI after my amp (orange ad200b) because I want a good amp sound without a mic.
I found a couple but dont know the quality of them. Maybe some of you know/use them.
-Hughes & Kettner Red Box Classic
-Tube Amp Doctor F.A.N.T.A.
-Palmer PDI 09
-Radial JDX
Thanks for any info, Lex. |

And how about Whirlwind? Found it at Zzound. Dont know anything about this brand.
Maybe ill get a red box and let it modify by a guy i know. He allready mod one for some one elsm
He made it more bass friendly, ill aks him if he can fix the highend roll off. |

Personally, I'd go with the Radial -- because I've already got one in my stage rig! I have several Whirlwind DIs and they've always worked well for me, although I've never used them in this capacity. Anything with a big pad -- say, 20 dB or so that's geared for amp level -- should work. Just watch out for the max prescribed ratings.
Hey, Peavey used to make one specifically for this job. It was called an EDI (Electronic Direct Interdace). I used one for years before a "friend" stole it.

Could I buy a Countryman, velcro it to the back of the amp, plug a speaker cable from the head to the DI, then from the DI to the cab, and be all set? There won't be any weird impedence mismatches or anything? I'm using a SansAmp Paradriver as a DI and distortion box, but matching the levels can be a pain, and it seems to really suck the mids out of my signal (I need ~4-6 dB boost @ 750hz to make it sounds the same). |

BTW, I finally had a chance at that gig to AB my Red Box with a Countryman, and the Countryman was a lot better. Had more low end, had more high end, and more output. So I've come to the conclusion that the Red Box, while it will work pretty well on bass, is way more suited for guitar than bass.

One of our guitarists is using a DI in this manor on his Marshall and Bogner heads. Our FOH guy says its better tone then mic'ing his cab.
I've been reluctant to try my countryman DI in this manor with my SVT. Sure its cool with a big tube head? If so, I wanna have a go. |

Just don't use it without a speaker load and you'll be fine.
