DI between amp and speaker.

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm looking for a good DI after my amp (orange ad200b) because I want a good amp sound without a mic.
I found a couple but dont know the quality of them. Maybe some of you know/use them.

-Hughes & Kettner Red Box Classic
-Tube Amp Doctor F.A.N.T.A.
-Palmer PDI 09
-Radial JDX

Thanks for any info, Lex.

The Radial and H&K are well-regarded for this job. The Countryman Type 85 and Avalon U5 are also top choices.

I'm going to get a Countryman, I think. I've got a Red Box Classic and it's very nice but I think its speaker DI could be a little brighter. It's got a high end rolloff that is a bit lower than I like.

And how about Whirlwind? Found it at Zzound. Dont know anything about this brand.
Maybe ill get a red box and let it modify by a guy i know. He allready mod one for some one elsm
He made it more bass friendly, ill aks him if he can fix the highend roll off.

Countryman, RedBox, and Radial are all highly regarded choices. Personally, I'd go with the Radial -- because I've already got one in my stage rig! I have several Whirlwind DIs and they've always worked well for me, although I've never used them in this capacity. Anything with a big pad -- say, 20 dB or so that's geared for amp level -- should work. Just watch out for the max prescribed ratings.

Hey, Peavey used to make one specifically for this job. It was called an EDI (Electronic Direct Interdace). I used one for years before a "friend" stole it.

Whirlwind's cheap and sounds like it. Passable, works in a pinch, but a Countryman or Red Box will blow it away.

I'm going to ressurect this thread, because my amp head doesn't have a DI (or even a line out, its an old 80s Ampeg tube head). Could I buy a Countryman, velcro it to the back of the amp, plug a speaker cable from the head to the DI, then from the DI to the cab, and be all set? There won't be any weird impedence mismatches or anything? I'm using a SansAmp Paradriver as a DI and distortion box, but matching the levels can be a pain, and it seems to really suck the mids out of my signal (I need ~4-6 dB boost @ 750hz to make it sounds the same).

I am using the Radial JDI as DI-ing my cab pluged in to my cab's parallel out! I am very happy with it, I like the sound of it, but not tried other DIs for this job.

Nope, it should be fine. I did it a couple weeks ago with an SVT-CL, and it was one of the best sounds I ever had.

BTW, I finally had a chance at that gig to AB my Red Box with a Countryman, and the Countryman was a lot better. Had more low end, had more high end, and more output. So I've come to the conclusion that the Red Box, while it will work pretty well on bass, is way more suited for guitar than bass.

Yeah, I was wondering about how the DI may/may not affect the impedance the amp sees. One of our guitarists is using a DI in this manor on his Marshall and Bogner heads. Our FOH guy says its better tone then mic'ing his cab.

I've been reluctant to try my countryman DI in this manor with my SVT. Sure its cool with a big tube head? If so, I wanna have a go.

I've done it with my B-15's, my 69 SVT, my 73 Super Reverb, and a rented SVT-CL. No problems at all any time I've done it. Just don't use it without a speaker load and you'll be fine.

I use my countryman almost every gig now with a V4 and have done it with an SVT. It's a non-issue.

The countryman has 10K impedance when in speaker mode. 10k in parallel with 8 is basically 8 ohms.

The Countryman site says it can handle 220V AC into the audio input "all day long", and static spikes up to 20,000V... so i imagine it can handle your tube amp.

If you check out the spec sheet here it says that it can tolerate the equivalent of 1700 watts into 8 ohms.

Wow! Right, I never really thought about the fact that its impedence is 10k ohms...the amp much not even "see" it.

Think I've found something new to buy!!
