DI Box Query

Sign in to disble this ad
Ok, so I have a stupidly high output Spector with a Tonepump. So I was looking at getting the EHX pedal that turns everything down. HOWEVER, a friend of mine suggested simply buying a DI box with a decibel pad, and using that. So I got one, but using the 'amp output' the DB pad has no effect (it only works on the XLR out). So I'm using an XLR balanced output into my tuner into my pedal board. Is this ok? It sounds good, but are there any draw backs waiting to bite me?

The volume knob on your bass doesn't work?

I like to keep it open full! It sounds dull otherwise, I'm not sure why. It's just how I like it.

Only problem would be if you played out, you'd need another DI to send a signal to FOH. I'd think the easiest and cheapest thing to do (if you're handy with a soldering pen) is to throw a 25K volume pot and two 1/4" jacks into a box. It'd be the equivalent of a volume pedal without being foot controllable.

Should I take the DI box back? And as for DIing my signal into the FOH, balls to that! You can put a mike infront of my rig! I don't spend ££££ to go thru a lifeless DI box!

That's entirely your call. If this does what you want, then you're fine. All a volume pedal or a DIY box would do is give you more control over the level you get.

Interesting, since a vast majority of the bass you hear live and recorded is through a lifeless DI box.

That is why so many bassists have bad, lifeless tone. I never saw Newsted, Kroeger, or Commerford go through a DI box, and those guys have the best tones ever in my eyes.
