Question DI Setup and Connection

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys, i'n currently looking at a few DI boxes for home recording purposes and i'm a bit lost concerning the setup and just general characteristics of the DI's in general. First, i'm looking for a quality box for home recording purposes, my main option right now (since 10 minutes ago) is the Behringer Ultra DI100 Behringer Ultra DI DI100 Active Direct Box at AmericanMusical.com. I would love to hear some comments tips, concerns, and or recommendations. But being a student i'm on a VERY tight budget and trying to get the best bang out of my $. Next, one thing that was worrying me was connecting the DI to my computer. Would it be necessary for me to get a mixer and then run the mixer to my computer? I'm asking because the Behringer seems to only have an XLR output, therefore leaving a gap as to how i would hook it up to my computer. Is there some way around getting a mixer? Or would having a mixer pose some advantage? I'm planning on using a recording/mixing/editing software with this and i was planning on changing the tone around on there, would this be smart? The program im planning on using is Reaper, any comments?REAPER | Audio Production Without Limits Finally, i'm playing a Passive bass, Epiphone Thunderbird to be exact, would this box cause any issues? Thank you.

I don't know much, but you sound like you're looking more for an interface than a DI. You might want to check out the ART USB DI boxes, ART Tube MP Project Series USB | Sweetwater.com

Not for nothing, but I think you're right. A DI will work in a computer with the right adapters, but some sort of interface with a gain control and maybe a little EQ-ability is your easiest bet for home recording.

Yup, you want one of those "made for computers" interfaces, and there's plenty of them to be had. M-Audio is a lower priced brand, try to stay away from behringer.
